The Shure BLX1288/MX153-H9 is a dual-channel UHF wireless microphone system built for presentations, worship services, live events, classrooms, and performance spaces. It combines a handheld SM58 vocal microphone with a discreet MX153 earset microphone, allowing two speakers or performers to work wirelessly at the same time. The H9 version operates in the 512–542 MHz frequency band and should be used only where that spectrum is authorized.
The included BLX88 receiver provides two independent wireless channels in one tabletop unit, helping reduce the equipment required for a two-microphone setup. Its one-touch group scan locates an available group and channel to simplify initial setup. Separate XLR and 1/4-inch audio outputs allow connection to a mixer, powered speaker, amplifier, or installed sound system.
The BLX2 handheld transmitter uses an SM58 capsule, a cardioid dynamic design known for focused vocal pickup and reduced off-axis sound. Its tailored vocal response, built-in wind and pop filtering, and pneumatic shock mounting support clear speech and singing in active environments. The BLX1 bodypack pairs with the MX153 earset for hands-free speech applications.
The MX153 uses a subminiature omnidirectional electret condenser capsule in a lightweight over-ear design. Its flexible boom positions the microphone close to the mouth for consistent spoken-word pickup, while its CommShield technology is designed to help resist RF interference from nearby cellular devices and digital bodypacks. The earset is suited to presenters, instructors, worship leaders, and performers who need mobility without holding a microphone.
Both transmitters operate on two AA batteries and are rated for up to 14 hours of battery life with alkaline cells. The system has a stated line-of-sight operating range of up to 300 feet, though actual range depends on RF conditions, interference, and obstructions. For larger installations, compatible BLX systems can support up to 12 simultaneous channels per frequency band under favorable regional and RF conditions.
Key Features
- Dual-Channel BLX88 Receiver: Runs the handheld and earset transmitters simultaneously.
- H9 UHF Band: Operates from 512 to 542 MHz.
- SM58 Handheld Microphone: Provides cardioid pickup tailored for vocal use.
- MX153 Earset: Delivers low-profile, hands-free speech reinforcement.
- One-Touch Group Scan: Helps find an available operating group and channel.
- AA Battery Operation: Transmitters deliver up to 14 hours of use.
Design & Installation
The BLX88 receiver, BLX1 bodypack, and BLX2 handheld transmitter use molded ABS housings designed for portable sound use. The SM58 capsule incorporates a steel-mesh grille and shock-mount system, while the MX153 uses a soft-flex, Kevlar-reinforced cable and flexible over-ear frame. The earset includes windscreens, a collar clip, and a storage pouch for routine transport and handling.
Connect the BLX88 to AC power with the supplied power supply, then route each receiver channel to a mixer, amplifier, or powered speaker using its XLR or 1/4-inch output. Install two AA batteries in each transmitter, perform a group scan on the receiver, and set each transmitter to the matching group and channel. Position the earset boom near the corner of the mouth, adjust transmitter gain as needed, and verify H9-band frequency authorization before use.

Can the handheld and earset microphones be used at the same time?
Yes. The included BLX88 is a dual-channel receiver, and the system includes both a BLX2/SM58 handheld transmitter and a BLX1 bodypack transmitter with MX153 earset.
What equipment do I need to connect this system to speakers?
The receiver connects to a mixer, amplifier, or powered speaker through its XLR microphone-level or 1/4-inch instrument-level outputs. The receiver power supply is included.
Is the H9 frequency band legal to use everywhere?
No. This version operates from 512 to 542 MHz, and wireless microphone frequency authorization varies by location. Confirm local spectrum rules and RF availability before purchase or operation.
What batteries do the transmitters use?
Both the BLX1 bodypack and BLX2 handheld use two 1.5 V AA alkaline batteries. Up to 14 hours of battery life is specified with alkaline batteries.
Can I connect the MX153 earset directly to the receiver?
No. The MX153 uses a TA4F/TQG connector and connects to the included BLX1 bodypack transmitter. The bodypack then transmits wirelessly to one channel of the BLX88 receiver.
Can this system be expanded for more microphones?
BLX systems can support up to 12 simultaneous compatible channels per frequency band in favorable RF conditions. Actual channel count depends on the local RF environment and regional frequency coordination.
