The Zoom H6essential is a portable handheld recorder designed to capture multi-source audio without the conventional gain-setting workflow. Its included X/Y microphone capsule and four XLR/TRS combo inputs provide six standard input channels for music sessions, interviews, location sound, and podcast production. Recording is made directly to a compatible microSD card in 32-bit float WAV format.

Musicians can connect microphones, mixers, and line-level sources to the four combo inputs while using the included X/Y capsule for a stereo room or ensemble capture. Podcasters can record up to four XLR-connected voices while retaining the built-in mic capsule for ambience or additional sources. For video work, the 3.5 mm line output can feed a camera while the headphone output supports monitoring.

The included XYH-6e capsule uses a 90-degree X/Y stereo arrangement with unidirectional microphones. It is specified for sound-pressure levels up to 135 dB SPL and is intended to provide a focused stereo image with natural depth and width. The H6essential also includes a built-in speaker for quick playback reference.

Dual A/D converter circuits support the recorder's 32-bit float workflow by automatically selecting between converters with different input gains. This architecture is designed to preserve a broad usable dynamic range across quiet and loud source material. The recorder supports 44.1, 48, and 96 kHz WAV recording, along with BWF and iXML metadata support.

The H6essential can also serve as a USB-C audio interface for computers, smartphones, and tablets while recording to its SD card at the same time. Its 3.0 interchangeable capsule system supports compatible optional capsules, including the SSH-6e stereo shotgun capsule and EXH-6e dual XLR/TRS input capsule. Optional BTA-1 hardware adds wireless remote-control and compatible wireless timecode capabilities.

Key Features

  • 32-Bit Float Recording: Records WAV files with a format designed to preserve usable detail across a wide range of input levels.
  • Six Standard Input Channels: The included stereo X/Y capsule and four combo inputs allow up to six channels to be captured in the standard configuration.
  • Four XLR/TRS Inputs: Locking combo jacks accept XLR microphones and TRS line-level connections for flexible source hookup.
  • Individual Phantom Power: Each of the four XLR/TRS inputs can supply +48 V phantom power for compatible condenser microphones.
  • USB-C Audio Interface: Provides 6-in/2-out multichannel or 2-in/2-out stereo interface operation and supports simultaneous SD-card recording.
  • Voice Guidance: Built-in spoken menu guidance supports accessible navigation through the recorder's controls and settings.

Design & Installation

The H6essential uses a portable handheld-recorder layout with dedicated track buttons, a selection dial, physical transport controls, a 2.00-inch full-color LCD, and a POWER/HOLD switch. Zoom does not publish a chassis-material specification, but the design includes a removable microphone capsule system, side-mounted input jacks, a battery compartment for four AA cells, and tripod mounting threads. A built-in speaker, 3.5 mm headphone output, and 3.5 mm line output support monitoring and playback without additional hardware.

For standalone recording, install a compatible microSDHC or microSDXC card, connect sources to the mic capsule and/or inputs 1 through 4, and power the recorder with four AA batteries or USB-C power. Use XLR connections for dynamic or condenser microphones, enabling phantom power only for microphones that require it; use TRS connections for mixers and other line-level devices. Passive guitars and basses should be connected through a mixer or effects device rather than directly to the recorder.
