The Zoom H1essential is a compact stereo handheld recorder for musicians, podcasters, filmmakers, and creators who need dedicated audio capture away from a phone or camera. Its built-in 90-degree X/Y microphone arrangement records a stereo image with natural left-to-right placement. It stores recordings to a microSD card and provides straightforward onboard recording and playback controls.

32-bit float WAV recording is the core recording format, helping preserve usable detail when sources are very quiet or playback levels need adjustment in post-production. Recording is available in stereo or mono at 44.1, 48, or 96 kHz. This makes the H1essential well suited to location sound, rehearsals, interviews, ambience, and simple music demos.

The onboard X/Y microphones are directional and rated to handle sound-pressure levels up to 120 dB SPL. A 3.5 mm MIC/LINE IN jack adds support for an external microphone or line-level source, including microphones that need plug-in power. A selectable low-cut filter at 80, 160, or 240 Hz can help reduce wind and vocal pop noise.

For computer, smartphone, and tablet workflows, the USB-C connection supports both file transfer and USB microphone use. In USB microphone mode, the H1essential operates at 48 kHz/16-bit with 2-in/2-out audio. The 3.5 mm PHONE/LINE OUT connection can feed headphones, a camera input, or another compatible device.

The H1essential also supports practical capture and review tools including pre-recording, automatic recording, overdubbing, markers, A-B repeat, and variable-speed playback. Firmware Version 2.0 added input-gain adjustment, AI Noise Reduction, and MP3 recording and export functions. Its small footprint, tripod mounting threads, built-in speaker, and AAA battery operation make it an easy addition to a portable recording kit.

Key Features

  • 32-Bit Float WAV Recording: Records 32-bit float WAV files for flexible level adjustment during editing.
  • 90-Degree X/Y Stereo Microphones: Captures a focused stereo sound field with natural width.
  • 120 dB SPL Handling: Built-in microphones accommodate loud sources such as live performances.
  • USB-C Microphone Mode: Works as a 48 kHz/16-bit USB microphone with compatible devices.
  • External Mic/Line Input: Connect a stereo mini-plug microphone or line-level source.
  • Firmware 2.0 Features: Adds input gain, AI Noise Reduction, and MP3 functions.

Design & Installation

The H1essential uses a compact handheld layout with a high-contrast 128 x 64 OLED display, dedicated transport controls, a side-mounted volume control, and a POWER/HOLD switch. Its built-in speaker allows quick playback without headphones, while the integrated tripod mounting threads support more stable placement. Quiet controls are designed to reduce handling noise during operation.

Insert a compatible microSDHC or microSDXC card before recording, then power the unit with two AAA batteries, USB bus power, or the optional Zoom AD-17 AC adapter. Use the onboard X/Y microphones for portable stereo capture, connect an external source through the MIC/LINE IN jack when needed, or connect the PHONE/LINE OUT jack to headphones, a camera, or another compatible input. For computer and mobile workflows, use a USB-C cable that supports data transfer.
