The RØDE BLIMP is a complete windshield and shock-mount system made for shotgun microphones used in location recording, film, broadcast, and field-production work. It combines an enclosed blimp-style windshield with an internal microphone suspension to reduce wind and handling noise before it reaches the microphone. The system is designed for users who need a more controlled recording setup outdoors or while operating a boom.

The BLIMP accommodates RØDE shotgun microphones and many third-party shotgun microphones up to 325 mm long and 19–22 mm in diameter. It is compatible with the RØDE NTG1, NTG2, and NTG3, while its adjustable suspension position helps users balance compatible microphones within the enclosure. This makes it suitable for configuring a microphone around its length and center of gravity.

Its Rycote Lyre suspension system isolates the microphone from handling vibration, while the enclosed windshield structure addresses wind disturbance around the microphone. The included Dead Wombat fur windshield adds another layer of wind protection for outdoor recording conditions. Together, these elements help the microphone capture program material with less interference from movement and airflow.

The BLIMP uses a lightweight skeleton handle with an adjustable angle for handheld operation. A Mogami cable is housed in the grip and routes through a junction box to a flexible internal microphone cable, helping limit vibration transfer through the cable path. Neutrik and Switchcraft XLR connectors are used in the supplied cable assembly.

For boom use, the handle base has a standard 3/8-inch thread attachment for compatible boompoles. The BLIMP can also be used with the optional RØDE Universal Blimp Mount when a handle-free boom configuration is preferred. It is a practical accessory upgrade for shotgun-microphone systems that move between handheld, boompole, and outdoor production work.

Key Features

  • Complete Windshield System: Combines a blimp enclosure and shock mount for shotgun microphones.
  • Rycote Lyre Suspension: Helps isolate the microphone from handling and vibration noise.
  • 325 mm Microphone Capacity: Fits many shotgun microphones up to 325 mm long.
  • Adjustable Lyre Positions: Lets the suspension clips move along rails for microphone balance.
  • Integrated Mogami Cable: Routes audio through the handle and flexible internal cable section.
  • Dead Wombat Included: Provides added wind protection for outdoor recording use.

Design & Installation

The BLIMP uses an enclosed windshield body, slide rails, Lyre clips, cable-management points, and a lightweight skeleton handle. Its internal Lyre spacing guide and movable clips support positioning of compatible microphones inside the enclosure. The handle incorporates the cable routing and a 3/8-inch threaded mounting point at its base.

To install a microphone, remove the rear dome, loosen the rail clamps, and slide out the suspension assembly. Place the microphone into the Lyre clips, adjust clip position as needed, connect the internal cable, and refit the assembly and rear dome. Use the included Dead Wombat for higher-wind outdoor work, or attach the BLIMP to a compatible boompole through its 3/8-inch thread.
