The Zoom F6 is a compact six-input field recorder and mixer built for location sound, video production, music capture, and mobile recording work. It gives creators a dedicated way to record multiple microphones while maintaining organized multitrack files for post-production. Its compact format suits sound bags, camera-based setups, and portable recording kits.

At its core, the F6 combines six XLR inputs with professional microphone preamps, selectable mic or line operation, and up to 75 dB of input gain. The preamps are specified at -127 dBu or lower equivalent input noise, supporting clean capture of quiet dialogue and detailed ambient material. Each input has its own dedicated level control for direct adjustment in the field.

32-bit float WAV recording with dual A/D converters is designed for productions with rapidly changing sound levels. This format preserves a broad recording range and can reduce the need to set gain precisely before recording. For 24-bit recording, the F6 also includes look-ahead hybrid limiters for overload protection.

The F6 can record up to 14 tracks simultaneously, including dual linear and floating files for six inputs plus an L/R mix. It supports WAV recording at sample rates up to 192 kHz and can also record MP3 files when a smaller stereo file is appropriate. BWF and iXML support help retain production metadata for editing workflows.

For picture synchronization, the F6 provides timecode input and output on a 3.5 mm stereo mini connector, with specified accuracy of ±0.2 ppm. It can also operate as a USB audio interface, including 6-in/4-out multitrack operation, and can record to an SD card while interfacing at supported settings. Optional Bluetooth hardware enables wireless control from the F6 Control iOS app.

Key Features

  • 32-Bit Float Recording: Captures wide input-level variations without conventional gain staging requirements.
  • Six Locking XLR Inputs: Connects up to six microphones or line-level sources.
  • 14-Track Recording: Records six dual-format input tracks plus an L/R mix.
  • Precision Timecode I/O: Supports camera-sync workflows with multiple frame-rate options.
  • USB Audio Interface: Adds multitrack computer audio connectivity alongside field recording.
  • Flexible Power Options: Runs from AA cells, Sony L-Series batteries, or USB power.

Design & Installation

The F6 uses a compact recorder/mixer layout with six locking Neutrik XLR input connectors, individual input level knobs, front-panel transport controls, and a 1.54-inch full-color LCD. Its monitoring section includes separate 3.5 mm headphone and line outputs. The supplied camera-mount adapter can help integrate the recorder with a camera-based rig.

For setup, connect microphones or line-level sources to Inputs 1-6, install a compatible SD, SDHC, or SDXC card, and select the required recording format, sample rate, and power source. Use the dedicated line output to feed a camera or external device, and use headphones for monitoring. Wireless iOS control requires the optional Zoom BTA-1 Bluetooth adapter, while multitrack USB interface use on Windows requires a driver.
