The Zoom F3 is a compact two-channel field recorder designed for location sound, music capture, and production audio where changing sound levels can be difficult to predict. It records in 32-bit float WAV format, providing substantial post-production flexibility when a source is much quieter or louder than expected. Its small format helps it fit into camera rigs, boom setups, and portable recording kits.
This recorder is suited to filmmakers, sound recordists, musicians, and content creators who need dependable two-input capture away from a studio. Two locking XLR mic/line inputs accommodate professional microphones and balanced line-level sources. A headphone output and separate line output support monitoring and feeding audio to compatible cameras or other equipment.
The F3 uses dual A/D converter circuits, so conventional input-gain adjustment is not required for recording. Its microphone preamps have an equivalent input noise rating of -127 dBu or less under the stated test conditions. The result is a clean recording path intended for quiet ambience, dialogue, interviews, effects gathering, and high-level sound sources.
Recordings are saved directly to microSDHC or microSDXC media as mono or stereo 32-bit float WAV files at sample rates up to 192 kHz. BWF and iXML formats are supported for production-oriented file handling. A backlit LCD provides real-time waveform monitoring while recording.
The F3 can also serve as a 2-in/2-out USB audio interface for computer, smartphone, or tablet workflows. It runs from two AA batteries, USB bus power, a compatible USB power source, or the optional Zoom AD-17 AC adapter. Optional accessories can add Bluetooth remote control or wireless timecode-oriented workflows.

- 32-Bit Float Recording: Captures wide source-level changes with flexible level adjustment during editing.
- Dual A/D Converters: Supports recording without conventional input-gain adjustment.
- Two Locking XLR Inputs: Provides secure connections for microphones and XLR line-level sources.
- Low-Noise Preamps: Delivers an equivalent input noise rating of -127 dBu or less.
- Up To 192 kHz Recording: Records mono or stereo 32-bit float WAV files.
- USB Audio Interface: Operates as a 2-in/2-out USB interface up to 96 kHz.
Design & Installation
The F3 has a compact metal casing with durable side bars, slide-resistant rubber feet, locking XLR connectors, and a standard tripod mount. Its backlit 96 x 64 LCD shows recorder status and real-time input waveforms. Dedicated headphone volume buttons and a REC/HOLD switch support practical field operation.
Connect microphones or XLR line-level sources to Inputs 1 and 2, then install a compatible microSDHC or microSDXC card for recording. Use the stereo mini line output to feed compatible camera or external gear inputs, and use the stereo mini headphone output for monitoring. For longer sessions, power the recorder with AA batteries, USB power, USB bus power, or the optional AD-17 adapter; Bluetooth control requires the optional BTA-1 adapter.
