Shure BLX14/B98-H9 Wireless Instrument Microphone System

The Shure BLX14/B98-H9 is a complete wireless instrument microphone system for brass, woodwind, and percussion performance. It pairs a clip-on cardioid condenser microphone with a bodypack transmitter and a single-channel tabletop receiver. The H9 version operates in the 512–542 MHz UHF frequency band, so local frequency authorization should be confirmed before use.

This system is suited to performers who need to move freely without placing a stand-mounted microphone in front of the instrument. The supplied WB98H/C, the wireless version of the BETA 98H/C, clamps to a wind instrument bell or percussion rim. Its integrated gooseneck and ratcheting swivel help position the capsule close to the source while keeping the setup compact.

The cardioid condenser microphone uses a tailored response intended for open, natural instrument reproduction. Its high SPL capability supports demanding acoustic sources such as horns and percussion. An isolation shock mount helps reduce mechanical vibration, including key and handling noise.

Shure BLX wireless operation combines a BLX1 bodypack transmitter with the BLX4 receiver for a straightforward analog UHF signal path. The receiver provides one-touch group scanning to locate an available group and channel, while transmitter settings are matched manually. The system offers up to 300 feet of line-of-sight operating range, although actual range varies with RF conditions and obstructions.

The BLX14/B98-H9 can connect to a mixer, powered speaker, or amplifier through the receiver's XLR microphone-level or 1/4-inch instrument-level output. The BLX1 bodypack uses two AA alkaline batteries and is rated for up to 14 hours of operation. For larger wireless setups, up to 12 BLX systems may operate simultaneously depending on the frequency band and local RF environment.

Design & Installation

The BLX1 transmitter and BLX4 receiver use molded ABS housings designed for portable live-sound use. The compact WB98H/C microphone includes a clip-on clamp, integrated gooseneck, ratcheting swivel joint, and shock-mounted capsule assembly. Its 1.6 m high-flex cable terminates in a locking 4-pin TA4F connector for the bodypack.

Clamp the microphone securely to an appropriate instrument bell or percussion rim, then route its TA4F cable to the BLX1 bodypack. Connect the BLX4 receiver to a mixer, powered PA speaker, or amplifier using either its XLR or 1/4-inch output, then perform a receiver group scan and set the transmitter to the matching group and channel. Keep transmitter and receiver in line of sight where possible, and adjust transmitter gain if the audio is faint or the receiver overload indicator illuminates.
