Roland TM-2 Acoustic Drum Trigger Module

The Roland TM-2 is a compact trigger module for adding electronic percussion, samples, and backing audio to an acoustic drum setup. It gives drummers a focused way to layer electronic sounds with kick, snare, tom, or auxiliary percussion without replacing their acoustic kit. Two trigger inputs let the module serve as the control center for a simple hybrid-drum expansion.

The TM-2 is intended for acoustic drummers who want added sounds for live performance, rehearsal, recording, or specialized setups. Its 162 internal instruments cover acoustic drum layers, percussion, and electronic sound choices. Users can save assignments in 99 kits for quicker changes between songs or playing situations.

Its sound approach is centered on blending triggered layers with an existing acoustic performance. A drummer can use an RT-series acoustic trigger for reinforced drum sounds, connect a Roland pad for extra percussion, or assign a custom sound to a trigger input. Internal and user WAV instruments can be adjusted with parameters including level, dynamics, pitch, pan, loop, mono/poly behavior, offset, mute group, MIDI note, and effect send.

An SD/SDHC card slot provides the TM-2's main sound-expansion path. Compatible WAV files can be loaded from a computer and assigned to pads or triggers alongside the built-in instruments. This supports one-shot sounds, loop phrases, and backing tracks while keeping the audio source close to the drum kit.

The TM-2 fits into a hybrid setup through stereo 1/4-inch outputs, a headphone output, and MIDI input and output. Connect its outputs to amplified speakers, a mixer, or a PA system, or use MIDI to work with compatible external sound modules and music software. Battery operation and the included AC adapter provide flexible power options for portable or fixed setups.

Design & Installation

The TM-2 uses a compact module format with a 16-character, two-line backlit LCD and direct front-panel controls for kit selection and editing. Roland does not specify the enclosure material, but the unit includes a mounting plate designed for stand or rack placement. The supplied mounting plate can be installed vertically or horizontally using the included screws.

Connect Roland pads or RT-series acoustic drum triggers to the two 1/4-inch TRS TRIG IN jacks, then select the appropriate trigger settings for the connected device. Send audio from the L/MONO and R outputs to powered speakers or a mixer, or connect headphones to the stereo mini phone jack for personal monitoring. For mounted use, pair the included mounting plate with a compatible separately sold Roland APC-33 all-purpose clamp on a hi-hat stand, cymbal stand, or drum rack.
