The Zoom ZM4 M4 MicTrak is a handheld four-track recorder designed for location sound, music capture, podcasting, and video production. Its built-in stereo microphone and two external XLR/TRS inputs let users capture ambience and separate sources in one portable device. It records directly to microSD media and also works as a USB audio interface.
For creators working with unpredictable sound levels, the M4 records in 32-bit float WAV format with a dual A/D converter circuit. This design removes the need for conventional input-gain adjustment and provides flexibility when adjusting levels during editing. It is well suited to dialogue, rehearsals, interviews, live performances, and sound-effects recording.
The integrated 90-degree X/Y stereo microphone uses two inward-facing unidirectional capsules to capture a focused stereo image with a clear center. Its 135 dB SPL maximum sound-pressure rating supports recording in louder environments. Two additional combo inputs allow external microphones or line-level sources to be recorded alongside the built-in stereo pair.
The M4 includes an onboard timecode generator with internal, external, and off modes for video workflows. A 3.5 mm timecode input/output connection supports synchronization with compatible production equipment. The color LCD provides real-time waveform monitoring for all four recorded tracks.
Its USB-C connection supports file transfer, USB bus power, and 4-in/2-out USB microphone operation at 48 kHz. A dedicated line output can feed a camera, while the headphone output supports direct monitoring. As a recording setup grows, the M4 can be paired with external XLR microphones, a compatible remote control, a tripod, and higher-capacity microSDXC media.

Design & Installation
The M4 combines a handheld recorder format with a specialized exterior finish and body construction intended to reduce handling noise. It has a 1.54-inch full-color LCD, onboard mono speaker, dedicated transport controls, a hold switch, and tripod mounting threads. The recorder measures 70.2 mm wide by 206.2 mm deep by 47.0 mm high and weighs 325 g with batteries installed.
Install a compatible microSDHC or microSDXC card before recording, then power the unit with four AA batteries, the optional Zoom AD-17 AC adapter, USB bus power, or a compatible 5 V portable battery. Connect external microphones or line-level equipment to the two XLR/TRS combo jacks, headphones to the 3.5 mm headphone output, and a camera to the 3.5 mm line output when needed. Use the included windscreen for basic outdoor or close-mic wind protection, and select a compatible Zoom RC2, RC4, RCH-5, or RCH-6 remote control for remote operation.
