Roland EC-10 Electronic Layered Cajon

The Roland EC-10 ELCajon is a hybrid percussion instrument that combines the familiar response of an acoustic cajon with built-in electronic layered sounds. It is designed for players who want to add rhythm textures without carrying a separate drum pad, sound module, and speaker. The acoustic cajon remains playable even when the electronic section is turned off.

Independent sensors for the head and edge of the playing surface allow two electronic sounds to be played from different striking areas. This makes it possible to layer complementary percussion voices over the cajon's natural acoustic tone. The result suits compact acoustic performances, rehearsals, songwriting sessions, and mobile percussion setups.

The EC-10 includes 30 layered sound kits divided among Cajon, Percussion, and SFX groups. Available sounds include cajon enhancements, traditional percussion textures, acoustic snare-style sounds, electronic drum voices, and effects. Studio-optimized cajon sounds are also included for players seeking added depth and punch alongside the natural instrument sound.

An integrated 3-watt amplifier and coaxial 6.5-inch speaker provide self-contained electronic sound reinforcement. Rear-panel controls include volume and trigger-balance adjustment, while top-panel buttons select sound groups and kit numbers. A threshold setting lets the player tailor electronic triggering response to their playing touch.

The EC-10 supports portable use with six AA alkaline batteries and can also operate from the included AC adaptor. Its MIX IN connection accepts an external audio source, allowing practice or performance playback through the instrument's onboard speaker. For larger setups, the ELECTRONIC SOUND OUT jack can feed an external amplifier, mixer, or PA system.

Design & Installation

The EC-10 uses a sapele plywood playing plate and an MDF resonance box in a standard cajon-style enclosure. It measures 295 mm wide, 298 mm deep, and 495 mm high, making it compact enough for typical seated cajon performance. The top-mounted selection buttons and rear-panel knobs are placed for access while playing.

No vehicle installation, mounting hardware, or speaker wiring is required. Place the EC-10 on a stable, level surface, power it with the supplied AC adaptor or six AA alkaline batteries, and select a kit using the top-panel controls. Connect a music player to MIX IN for playback, or connect ELECTRONIC SOUND OUT to an external amplifier or PA when additional electronic-sound volume is needed.
