The Roland GAIA-2 is a 37-key synthesizer designed for players, producers, and sound designers who want direct hands-on control over modern electronic sounds. Its hybrid sound engine combines wavetable synthesis with virtual analog synthesis, providing a broad starting point for creating basses, leads, pads, effects, and rhythmic textures. The dedicated controls help reduce menu navigation during sound creation and performance.
GAIA-2 is suited to musicians learning synthesis as well as experienced users building detailed patches for studio work or live sets. Its full-size keyboard, pitch bend wheel, modulation wheel, arpeggiator, and chord memory support expressive playing without requiring external controllers. The onboard sequencer also makes it practical for developing musical ideas away from a computer.
The sound engine uses one wavetable oscillator and two virtual analog oscillators per voice. Wavetable position, phase modulation, shaping modulation, oscillator sync, ring modulation, and cross modulation provide multiple ways to change a sound's harmonic character. A multimode filter with selectable slopes and drive adds further tonal shaping.
GAIA-2 includes flexible modulation tools for sounds that evolve over time. Two LFOs can each be assigned to up to four eligible panel parameters, while the Motional Pad enables two-dimensional parameter control and motion recording. These tools can add movement to a patch during performance or play back recorded changes automatically.
For a complete setup, GAIA-2 connects to mixers, monitors, headphones, MIDI devices, computers, and compatible mobile devices. USB-C provides class-compliant audio and MIDI connectivity, while USB Type-A supports storage and external USB MIDI controllers. Roland Model Expansions are supported, and the SH-101 Model Expansion is pre-installed.
Key Features
- Hybrid Sound Engine: Combines wavetable and virtual analog oscillators for varied sound design.
- 37 Full-Size Keys: Provides a familiar keyboard feel for playing and performance.
- Motional Pad: Controls assigned parameters in two dimensions and records movement.
- 64-Step Sequencer: Captures notes and controller movements in multiple recording modes.
- Built-In Effects: Includes 53 multi-effects plus dedicated chorus and delay/reverb sections.
- USB-C Audio/MIDI: Connects with computers and mobile devices using class-compliant USB.
Design & Installation
GAIA-2 uses a compact keyboard format with a white anodized aluminum panel, dedicated knobs, sliders, wheels, and a 128 x 64-dot OLED display. The panel is organized around the sound-design workflow, with oscillator, filter, amplifier, modulation, effects, and sequencing controls accessible from the instrument. Front and rear headphone connections provide flexible monitoring options.
For setup, connect the included PSB-5U AC adaptor or use supported USB-C bus power, then route the L/MONO and R outputs to a mixer, audio interface, powered speakers, or amplifier. A sustain or expression pedal can connect through the pedal jack, and MIDI IN/OUT can integrate the instrument with external hardware. USB storage can be used for data backup and restoration, while USB-C can connect the synthesizer to compatible music software.
