The Roland AE-01 Aerophone mini is a compact digital wind instrument designed for players who want an approachable way to begin making music. Its recorder-style key layout avoids complex chord shapes, helping beginners focus on basic fingering and breath control. A PCM synthesizer provides six onboard tones: saxophone, flute, clarinet, violin, trumpet, and synthesizer. The built-in reverb adds ambience, while the breath sensor translates playing pressure into expressive performance control. Recorder-style fingering and octave keys support a familiar, streamlined playing approach.

Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity supports both audio playback and MIDI over Bluetooth Low Energy. Players can stream music from a compatible mobile device for play-along sessions, while Bluetooth MIDI can be used with compatible music-production software instruments. The free Aerophone mini Plus app also provides more than 50 additional sounds and guided learning content.

The AE-01 includes a 2.8 cm internal speaker rated at 1.5 W for self-contained practice. A stereo mini PHONES/OUTPUT jack allows private headphone use or connection to external speakers. When headphones are connected, the internal speaker is muted for quieter practice.

Power comes from four separately sold AA Ni-MH rechargeable batteries or a separately sold USB AC adaptor. With 1,900 mAh Ni-MH batteries, Roland rates continuous operation at approximately 10 hours, subject to usage conditions. Its compact 43 x 76 x 444 mm form makes it easy to carry as a standalone instrument, and Bluetooth MIDI offers a path into app-based recording and sound exploration.

Design & Installation

The Aerophone mini uses a slim, compact handheld design with performance keys, octave keys, a function button, and a dedicated mouthpiece. It measures 17-1/2 inches tall and weighs 1 lb 2 oz with batteries installed. A mouthpiece cap, neck strap, band, owner's manual, and USB power cable are included.

No vehicle installation or amplifier wiring is required. Insert four AA Ni-MH rechargeable batteries or connect a separately sold USB AC adaptor, then use the onboard speaker, plug headphones or external speakers into the stereo mini output, or pair a compatible mobile device by Bluetooth.
