Roland SPD-SX Sampling Pad

The Roland SPD-SX is a standalone sampling pad designed for performers who need immediate access to loops, one-shots, backing parts, clicks, and custom percussion sounds. Its nine velocity-sensitive pads provide a direct way to trigger audio with sticks or hands during a performance. It is well suited to hybrid drum kits, percussion setups, keyboard rigs, DJ applications, rehearsal spaces, and recording environments.

Built-in sampling tools let players capture and assign audio without relying solely on a computer. Multi-Pad Sampling can divide incoming audio into separate pad assignments as the pads are struck, helping create playable sample maps from an external source. The internal 4 GB memory stores samples inside the unit, reducing the need to keep a separate storage device connected during use.

The SPD-SX is built around expressive triggering and flexible playback rather than a fixed library of drum sounds. Nine rubber pads respond to playing dynamics, while pad LEDs indicate pad status and audio-level activity. This makes it practical for firing short effects, sustaining phrases, looped material, and performance cues in a visible stage-oriented layout.

Three onboard multi-effects sections support sound shaping during performance: a master effects section plus two kit effects sections. Dedicated effect buttons and two real-time control knobs provide hands-on access to selected effects parameters. Separate master and sub outputs also support routing flexibility for live sound, monitoring, and click-track workflows.

For integrating custom content, the SPD-SX supports 16-bit, 44.1 kHz WAV and AIFF audio data and includes SPD-SX Wave Manager software. Hi-Speed USB supports USB MIDI, USB audio, mass storage, and USB flash-drive functions. External trigger inputs, MIDI connections, footswitch support, audio inputs, and multiple audio outputs allow the pad to expand into a larger electronic or acoustic performance system.

Design & Installation

The SPD-SX uses nine rubber playing surfaces with LED indicators and high-contrast pad-divider lines for clear onstage visibility. Its large backlit 128 x 64-dot graphic LCD provides parameter and status information, while the front-panel controls place kit, sampling, and effects functions within reach. The unit measures 14-5/16 inches wide, 13-1/16 inches deep, and 3-3/4 inches high, excluding cables and external mounting hardware.

Connect the supplied AC adaptor to the DC IN jack, then route the master outputs to a mixer, PA system, monitor, or audio interface as needed. Samples can be imported through USB flash memory or a computer using SPD-SX Wave Manager; audio can also be captured through the stereo audio inputs. For expanded setups, connect compatible external pads or triggers to the two TRS trigger inputs, and use the footswitch and MIDI connections for additional control.
