The Zoom R20 is a standalone multitrack recorder designed for musicians who want to capture, arrange, and mix songs without relying on a computer. Its touchscreen workflow puts recording, editing, and project management directly on the hardware. With eight recording inputs and up to 16 tracks of simultaneous playback, it provides a compact workspace for demos, rehearsals, songwriting, and full-band projects.

Eight mono mic/line inputs allow the R20 to handle multiple sources at once, including vocals, instruments, drum microphones, and line-level gear. Inputs 1 and 2 use XLR/TRS combo jacks, while inputs 3 through 8 use XLR connectors. Input 1 also supports Hi-Z operation for direct connection of a guitar or bass.

The R20 records 44.1 kHz WAV audio at 16- or 24-bit resolution to compatible SDHC or SDXC cards. Its 4.3-inch color touchscreen supports touch-based track arrangement and region editing, making it practical for building a song directly on the recorder. Dedicated faders and transport controls provide hands-on level and playback control while tracking and mixing.

Built-in processing helps shape recordings without requiring external plug-ins. Each project can use EQ, pan, send effects, stereo linking, and comp, limiter, or gate processing, while the effect section supports up to three effect types at once. The R20 also includes 150 PCM rhythm loops, an FM synth with 18 sound types plus a PCM drum kit, and a tuner for instrument setup.

Beyond standalone recording, the R20 can serve as a USB-C audio interface for a computer, smartphone, or tablet. Multitrack mode supports 8-in/4-out audio interfacing, while Stereo Mix mode supports 2-in/2-out operation. It can also function as a Mackie Control-compatible DAW control surface, giving it a useful role in a computer-based recording setup.

Key Features

  • Eight Recording Inputs: Capture up to eight mono sources simultaneously for band sessions and drum tracking.
  • 16-Track Playback: Play back up to 16 tracks at once while building complete arrangements.
  • Touchscreen Editing: Arrange, copy, paste, move, and edit recorded regions directly on the unit.
  • Built-In Processing: Use EQ, dynamics tools, insert effects, and send effects during production.
  • Rhythm And Synth Tools: Create ideas with 150 rhythm loops and onboard synth sounds.
  • USB-C Interface Mode: Connect to compatible computers and mobile devices for audio interface operation.

Design & Installation

The R20 uses a tabletop format that combines a 4.3-inch full-color touchscreen with physical channel faders, transport controls, input controls, and dedicated monitoring connections. Its layout is intended to keep recording and mixing functions accessible from one workspace. Balanced TRS master outputs and a dedicated stereo headphone output support connection to monitors and headphones.

For standalone recording, install a compatible SDHC or SDXC card, connect microphones or instruments to the eight inputs, connect powered monitors or headphones, and use the included-specification 12 V power supply requirement. For computer recording, connect a data-capable USB-C cable and select the appropriate Stereo Mix or Multitrack interface mode. A USB MIDI keyboard may also be connected for playing the onboard synth, while the optional Zoom BTA-1 wireless adapter enables compatible remote functionality.
