The Zoom H6studio is a portable multitrack handheld recorder designed for musicians, filmmakers, podcasters, and field-recording users who need flexible capture without carrying a separate recording rig. It combines a stereo XY microphone capsule with four locking XLR/TRS combo inputs for recording built-in microphones, external microphones, mixers, and line-level sources. Audio is recorded to microSD media in WAV formats up to 192 kHz.

For interview, podcast, rehearsal, live-performance, and production-sound work, the H6studio provides six individual input tracks from its capsule and four external inputs. It can also create a stereo mix file, for up to eight simultaneous recorded tracks when the mix is enabled. Four physical gain controls support hands-on level adjustment when using 16- or 24-bit recording modes.

The included XYH-5s capsule uses a 90-degree XY stereo configuration with unidirectional microphones. Its 19.4 mm microphones are specified to handle sound-pressure levels up to 140 dB SPL, supporting both quiet sources and high-volume environments. Zoom specifies a flat-response microphone character and 123 dB of dynamic range for the XY microphone system.

For unpredictable sound levels, the H6studio supports 32-bit float recording and uses dual A/D converters for its inputs. Its F-Series preamps are specified at -127 dBu or less equivalent input noise at a 150-ohm input, while advanced look-ahead limiters can be enabled by track or for mix files. The limiter is unavailable at the 192 kHz sample-rate setting.

The H6studio can work as a standalone recorder, camera-audio source, or USB audio interface. Its 3.5 mm line output can feed a camera, while the headphone output and built-in speaker support monitoring and playback. USB-C supports data transfer, bus power, and audio-interface use with compatible computers and mobile devices.

Key Features

  • Six Individual Input Tracks: Capture the stereo capsule and four external inputs at once.
  • 32-Bit Float WAV: Provides flexible level recovery during compatible post-production workflows.
  • Four Locking Combo Inputs: Connect XLR microphones or TRS line-level sources.
  • Large XY Microphones: 19.4 mm microphones handle up to 140 dB SPL.
  • Advanced Look-Ahead Limiters: Helps manage overloads before they reach recorded tracks.
  • USB Audio Interface: Operates as a 6-in/2-out interface in multichannel mode.

Design & Installation

The H6studio is built as a self-contained handheld recorder with a removable XYH-5s microphone capsule, four locking XLR/TRS combo jacks, dedicated gain knobs, a 2.0-inch full-color LCD, and a side-mounted microSD card slot. Zoom does not state an enclosure material in its published specifications. Its physical controls, onboard speaker, headphone output, and line output are arranged for portable recording and monitoring.

No vehicle-style installation or amplifier wiring is required. Insert a compatible microSDHC or microSDXC card, install four AA batteries or connect USB-C power, then connect microphones or line-level sources to the appropriate inputs. For camera work, connect the 3.5 mm line output to the camera input; for computer or mobile workflows, use a data-capable USB-C cable and select the required audio-interface mode.
