The Zoom H5studio is a portable handheld recorder designed to capture stereo location sound, interviews, music rehearsals, podcasts, and production audio without requiring a computer at the recording site. Its built-in XYH-5s stereo capsule and two XLR/TRS inputs provide a compact way to record onboard microphones and external sources together. Recordings are saved to separately purchased microSDHC or microSDXC media.

This recorder suits musicians documenting performances, podcasters recording in the field, filmmakers capturing reference or production audio, and creators who need a flexible mobile recorder. The integrated 19.4 mm XY microphones provide a 90-degree stereo configuration, while the two combo inputs accommodate external microphones, instruments, and compatible line-level sources. A 3.5 mm MIC/LINE input on the supplied capsule adds support for compatible stereo microphones and plug-in-power mics.

The H5studio is built around low-noise F-series preamps, rated at -127 dBu or less equivalent input noise with a 150-ohm source. Its microphone capsule is specified for up to 140 dB SPL, helping it handle a wide range of sound sources. Dedicated gain knobs allow direct adjustment of the mic capsule and external-input levels when working in fixed-bit recording modes or monitoring a source.

Dual A/D converter circuitry and 32-bit float WAV recording are intended to preserve usable audio across large level changes and provide more flexibility during post-production. The recorder also supports 16-bit and 24-bit fixed WAV recording for workflows that prefer conventional files. Advanced limiters and selectable low-cut filtering add practical control for recordings affected by sudden peaks, wind, handling noise, or vocal plosives.

For a broader production setup, the H5studio functions as a 4-in/2-out USB audio interface for computers and compatible mobile devices, with simultaneous onboard backup recording available at supported sample rates. A 3.5 mm line output can feed a camera, while the headphone output and built-in speaker support monitoring and playback. The Zoom Capsule System 3.0 also supports optional SSH-6e shotgun and EXH-6e dual-input capsules for specialized recording needs.

Key Features

  • 19.4 mm XYH-5s Stereo Capsule: Uses two unidirectional microphones in a 90-degree XY arrangement for focused stereo capture.
  • 32-Bit Float Recording: Records 32-bit float WAV files to provide additional latitude when adjusting levels after recording.
  • F-Series Preamps: Delivers low-noise external microphone and line-input performance with dedicated input gain controls.
  • Six-Track Recording: Captures up to four individual tracks plus a stereo mix file when the selected recording mode supports it.
  • Flexible Audio Inputs: Provides two locking XLR/TRS combo inputs with 48 V phantom power and a capsule-mounted 3.5 mm MIC/LINE input.
  • USB Audio Interface: Operates as a 4-in/2-out USB interface for recording, streaming, and monitoring with compatible devices.

Design & Installation

Zoom does not specify the H5studio enclosure material, but its handheld design combines a 2.0-inch full-color LCD, physical transport controls, dedicated gain knobs, a rear speaker, and a tripod socket. RF shielding is incorporated to help reduce interference from nearby smartphones and Wi-Fi equipment. The recorder measures 86.0 mm wide by 206.0 mm deep by 54.6 mm high and weighs 410 g with batteries installed.

Install a compatible microSDHC or microSDXC card before recording, then power the unit with four AA batteries, USB bus power, or the optional Zoom AD-17 adapter. Connect external microphones or line devices to the locking XLR/TRS inputs, enable 48 V phantom power only for microphones that require it, and use the 3.5 mm line output to send audio to a camera when needed. For stable tabletop or on-location use, attach the recorder to a suitable tripod through its integrated tripod socket.
