Rockford Fosgate PMX-2 Marine Digital Media Receiver

The Rockford Fosgate PMX-2 is a compact marine and motorsports digital media receiver designed for systems where a conventional in-dash radio is too large or unsuitable. Its round, gauge-style form factor fits a 3-inch mounting cutout, making it useful for boats, UTVs, ATVs, and other exposed applications. It combines AM, FM, and weather-band radio with wired and wireless digital music playback.

A 2.7-inch full-color TFT display provides clear source, track, and tuning information, while the optically wet-bonded screen construction is intended to help resist dust and moisture intrusion. The display includes automatic dimming for changing ambient light. A water-resistant rotary encoder and white LED button illumination support practical operation in marine environments.

The PMX-2 has a built-in four-channel amplifier rated at 25 watts RMS per channel at 4 ohms. It can also deliver up to 50 watts per channel at 2 ohms peak, allowing it to run compatible speakers directly in a compact system. For systems that need more output, its front and rear/subwoofer RCA outputs allow connection to external amplifiers.

Music sources include Bluetooth streaming, USB, and a stereo auxiliary input. Bluetooth supports A2DP and AVRCP profiles, while USB playback supports MP3 and WMA files and provides 1-amp device charging. Pandora control and iPod playback are also supported with compatible devices.

Sound tuning is handled with onboard Punch EQ processing, a 7-band graphic equalizer, selectable high-pass, low-pass, or all-pass crossovers, and independent subwoofer level control. The receiver supports one zone and one source, with rear channels configurable for rear speakers or subwoofer output. It is a practical control center for a direct-to-speaker setup or a staged system with added marine amplifiers and wired remotes.

Design & Installation

The PMX-2 uses a compact round chassis with an IPX6-rated marine-grade design, water-resistant rotary encoder, optically wet-bonded display, and white LED button illumination. It is also certified to ISO8846/SAE J1171 ignition-protection requirements. These features make it suited to properly installed marine and motorsports audio systems where exposure to vibration, moisture, UV, and changing temperatures is a concern.

Installation requires a 3-inch (77 mm) rear-panel cutout and a 10.5- to 16-volt electrical system protected by the specified 20-amp fuse. Connect up to four compatible 2-ohm-or-higher speakers to the internal amplifier, or use the front and rear/sub RCA outputs with external amplifiers. An antenna is required for radio reception and is not included; optional PMX-1R and PMX-0R wired remotes can be added within the stated remote-system limits.
