Hertz MLCX2TW-3 2-Way Passive Crossover Set

The Hertz MLCX2TW-3 is a 2-way passive crossover designed for Mille Legend component speaker systems. It separates the signal between a woofer and tweeter using dedicated low-pass and high-pass networks. This gives installers a controlled way to integrate compatible Hertz Mille Legend drivers into a vehicle audio system.

This crossover is intended for shoppers building or servicing a high-quality front-stage component system rather than adding a full-range speaker by itself. Its selectable controls help tailor the crossover behavior to speaker placement and vehicle acoustics. The design supports use with the Hertz ML 280.3 tweeter and either the ML 1650.3 or ML 1800.3 woofer.

The woofer section uses a 6 dB-per-octave low-pass filter, while the tweeter section uses a 12 dB-per-octave high-pass filter. Selectable Mid-Contour and Hi-Contour settings change the crossover point between 2.5 kHz and 3.5 kHz. A three-position tweeter-level adjustment provides +2 dB, 0 dB, or -2 dB tuning.

The MLCX2TW-3 also supports bi-amplification through its dedicated selector. In bi-amp mode, separate amplifier channels can drive the woofer and tweeter sections independently. This provides a flexible upgrade path for systems using multiple amplifier channels.

Hertz uses bi-metallized 160V polyester film capacitors, air-wound copper-wire inductors, and wirewound resistors in the network. These components are selected for the demands of a passive crossover handling high transient currents in the woofer section and high-frequency signal routing to the tweeter. The compact enclosure measures 7.67 x 4.68 x 1.61 inches for practical placement inside a vehicle.

Design & Installation

The MLCX2TW-3 uses bi-metallized polyester film capacitors rated at 160V with ultra-low dissipation factor, along with air-wound inductors made with pure copper wire up to 1 mm in diameter. Its high-power wirewound resistors are designed for thermal stability and low parasitic series inductance. The crossover housing measures 195 x 119 x 41 mm and weighs 0.57 kg per crossover.

Mount the crossover securely in a dry location with enough room for its 195 x 119 mm footprint and 41 mm depth. Connect compatible woofer and tweeter outputs with correct polarity, then use the Mid-Contour, Hi-Contour, Hi-Boost, and tweeter-level switches during final system tuning. For bi-amplified operation, set the Bi-Amp selector to ON and connect separate amplifier channels to the woofer and tweeter inputs.
