The Zoom R4 MultiTrak is a compact standalone 4-track recorder for musicians who want to capture, arrange, and develop songs without relying on a computer. It records directly to a microSD card and provides two XLR/TS combo inputs plus a built-in mono microphone. Its dedicated bounce track lets users combine existing parts and continue adding new layers.

This recorder suits songwriters, instrumentalists, vocalists, and mobile creators building demos, practice tracks, or arranged recordings. It can record up to two tracks simultaneously and play back up to four tracks at once. A built-in rhythm section and onboard effects support writing and rehearsal workflows directly from the unit.

The R4 records 48 kHz, 32-bit float WAV audio, preserving wide working headroom for later editing. Its dual A/D converter input design automatically selects between converters with different input gains, eliminating a conventional input-gain control step. This is useful when recording sources with unpredictable level changes.

Two XLR/TS combo inputs accommodate microphones, guitars, keyboards, and other compatible sources, with Hi-Z support for direct guitar connection. Separate switchable +48 V phantom power is available for Inputs A and B when condenser microphones are used. A 3.5 mm headphone/line output provides monitoring, while four faders give direct control over track playback levels.

Beyond standalone recording, the R4 operates as a 2-in/2-out USB audio interface for computers, smartphones, and tablets. It supports 24-bit or 32-bit float USB audio at 48 kHz and includes direct monitoring for latency-free input monitoring. Four AA batteries, USB bus power, or an optional Zoom AD-17 adapter provide flexible power options for home, rehearsal, and portable setups.

Key Features

  • Four-Track Recording: Build projects with four playback tracks and a separate bounce track.
  • 32-Bit Float WAV: Captures 48 kHz recordings with extensive editing headroom.
  • Dual A/D Conversion: Automatically handles a wide range of input levels.
  • Two Combo Inputs: Connect XLR microphones or TS instruments and line-level sources.
  • Onboard Rhythm and Effects: Add timing support and sound processing without external gear.
  • USB Audio Interface: Sends and receives two channels over USB-C.

Design & Installation

The R4 uses a compact recorder layout with a 2-inch full-color LCD, four physical faders, dedicated transport controls, front-panel input connections, and a built-in mono microphone. Its design also includes a 1/4-inch tripod mounting thread for secure placement on a compatible stand. Zoom specifies dimensions of 74 mm wide, 138 mm deep, and 36 mm high, with a listed weight of 287 g including batteries.

For recording, insert and format a compatible microSDHC or microSDXC card, connect microphones or instruments to Inputs A and B, and monitor through headphones with a stereo 3.5 mm plug. Use the INPUT A/MIC switch to select the built-in microphone instead of Input A when needed. For computer, smartphone, or tablet use, connect a data-capable USB-C cable and select the appropriate USB operating mode; Windows requires the Zoom driver for 32-bit float interface operation.
