The Zoom R12 MultiTrak is a compact multitrack recorder for writing, recording, editing, and mixing music away from a computer. It records up to two tracks at once and plays back up to eight tracks, making it suited to solo musicians, songwriters, and small recording setups. A full-color touchscreen provides direct access to track arrangement, editing, and mix functions.
Two XLR/TRS combo inputs accept microphones and line-level sources, while INPUT 1 adds a Hi-Z mode for direct connection of passive guitar or bass pickups. Independently switchable 48V phantom power supports condenser microphones on either input. Balanced master outputs and a dedicated stereo headphone output provide practical monitoring options for home, rehearsal, and portable sessions.
The R12 records 44.1 kHz WAV files at 16- or 24-bit resolution to a compatible microSDHC or microSDXC card. Its touchscreen timeline supports working with recorded audio, rhythm loops, and synthesizer regions in a project-based workflow. Built-in level control, EQ, panning, dynamics processing, and effects help shape a complete demo or working mix on the recorder itself.
For songwriting, the R12 includes 150 PCM rhythm loops and an FM synthesizer with 18 sound types plus a PCM drum kit. The synth supports up to eight-note polyphony and can be played with a compatible USB MIDI keyboard or programmed as MIDI note data. A chromatic tuner, selectable instrument tunings, and a metronome further support practice and tracking sessions.
When a computer, smartphone, or tablet is part of the workflow, the R12 can operate as a USB audio interface, card reader, and Mackie Control-compatible DAW control surface. It supports 2-in/2-out and 2-in/4-out interface modes, depending on the connected device and application. Power can come from four AA batteries, USB bus power, a USB power source, or the optional Zoom AD-17 AC adapter.

Design & Installation
The R12 uses a compact desktop format with physical gain controls, transport buttons, channel faders, master and effects faders, output level controls, and a 2.4-inch full-color touchscreen. Its two balanced TRS master outputs, stereo 3.5 mm headphone jack, USB Type-C port, and microSD card slot keep recording, monitoring, storage, and computer connectivity accessible from a single unit. The recorder measures 256 mm wide by 158 mm deep by 61 mm high and weighs 827 g including batteries.
For standalone recording, install four compatible AA batteries or connect USB power, then insert and format a compatible microSDHC or microSDXC card before recording. Connect microphones or line sources to the combo inputs, enable phantom power only when required, and use the INPUT 1 Hi-Z switch for passive guitar or bass. Connect powered monitors to the balanced outputs or headphones to the stereo mini jack; for computer recording or DAW control, use a USB Type-C data cable.

Can the R12 record without a computer?
Yes. It is a standalone multitrack recorder with onboard touchscreen editing and mixing. A compatible microSD card must be inserted for recording and playback.
Can I connect a condenser microphone?
Yes. Both XLR/TRS combo inputs support separately switchable +48V phantom power. Enable phantom power only for microphones or equipment that require it.
Can I plug a guitar or bass directly into it?
Yes. INPUT 1 has a 1 MΩ Hi-Z mode intended for direct connection of passive guitar or bass pickups. INPUT 2 accepts instruments and line-level sources with Hi-Z off.
What type of memory card does the R12 use?
It supports microSDHC cards from 4 GB to 32 GB and microSDXC cards from 64 GB to 1 TB. Zoom recommends formatting new cards in the R12 before use.
Can it work as a computer audio interface?
Yes. The R12 supports USB audio-interface operation in 2-in/2-out and 2-in/4-out modes at 44.1 kHz and 16- or 24-bit resolution. Mac computers, smartphones, and tablets do not require a driver; Windows uses the R12 driver.
How is the R12 powered?
It can run on four AA alkaline, lithium, or rechargeable NiMH batteries, USB bus power, a 5V USB power source, or the Zoom AD-17 5V/1.0A adapter. Estimated playback time with phantom power off and 32Ω headphones is about five hours with alkaline or 1900 mAh NiMH batteries.
