The Mackie THUMP118S is an active 18-inch PA subwoofer built to add dedicated low-frequency output to a live sound system. Its integrated Class-D amplifier eliminates the need to match the subwoofer with a separate external power amp. It is suited to DJs, bands, venues, schools, houses of worship, and event systems that need fuller bass support.
An 18-inch ferrite woofer handles the low end, with a specified frequency range of 30 Hz to 150 Hz at -10 dB. The system is rated for up to 132 dB peak SPL, helping it keep pace with powered full-range PA speakers in small to medium event setups. Its sound can be tailored for balanced output, deeper bass extension, or increased peak output depending on the program material.
Mackie uses selectable high-pass voicing modes to coordinate the subwoofer with connected top speakers. Flat, Deep, Punch, and Variable modes alter the system behavior, while Variable mode provides an adjustable 80 Hz to 160 Hz high-pass point for the top speakers. A normal/invert polarity switch helps blend the subwoofer with the rest of the system.
The THUMP118S accepts balanced stereo line-level signals through two female XLR inputs. Two high-pass XLR outputs can feed powered top speakers, while two full-range XLR outputs can pass audio to additional speakers or subwoofers. The full-range outputs can operate in stereo or as a mono sum, which is useful when expanding a multi-subwoofer system.
This subwoofer is designed as a floor- or stage-mounted foundation for a PA system. An integrated M20 threaded pole mount can support a compatible loudspeaker pole and top speaker above the cabinet. Its onboard level control, signal/overload indicator, limiting, and thermal protection support practical setup and monitoring at events.
Key Features
- 18-Inch Ferrite Woofer: Provides dedicated low-frequency reinforcement for PA systems.
- 1400W Peak Class-D Amplifier: Delivers powered operation without an external amplifier.
- Four High-Pass Modes: Select Flat, Deep, Punch, or Variable system voicing.
- Variable Crossover: Adjusts top-speaker high-pass frequency from 80 to 160 Hz.
- Stereo XLR I/O: Connects mixers, powered speakers, and additional subwoofers.
- Polarity And Level Controls: Helps integrate the subwoofer with connected speakers.
Design & Installation
The THUMP118S combines an 18-inch ferrite low-frequency driver with a built-in Class-D amplifier and convection cooling. Integrated top-corner handles assist with transport, and the cabinet includes an M20 threaded pole mount for a compatible top-speaker pole. A defeatable front power LED and rear-panel signal/overload indicator provide straightforward operational feedback.
Place the THUMP118S on a stable floor or stage surface; it is not designed to be suspended or pole-mounted as a subwoofer. Connect balanced line-level output from a mixer or source to either or both XLR inputs, then use the high-pass outputs for top speakers or the full-range outputs to daisy-chain additional equipment. Start with the level control at unity gain, choose the high-pass mode that fits the system, and use the polarity switch to achieve the strongest blend at the listening position.

Is the THUMP118S a car subwoofer?
No. It is a powered PA subwoofer for professional live-sound and event systems. It uses AC power and balanced XLR line-level audio connections.
What do I need to connect it to a PA system?
You need a line-level source such as a mixer and appropriate balanced XLR cables. Powered top speakers can be connected from the THUMP118S high-pass outputs.
Can I use one input for a mono or LFE signal?
Yes. Mackie states that a single subwoofer or LFE output may be connected to either the A or B XLR input. Do not connect the output of a power amplifier directly to the subwoofer input.
Can I connect more than one THUMP118S?
Yes. The full-range XLR outputs can be used to daisy-chain additional powered subwoofers. The full-range output mode can be set to stereo or mono summed operation.
Can the subwoofer be suspended or mounted on a pole?
No. The THUMP118S is intended to sit on a floor or stage and has no rigging points. Its M20 threaded socket is for mounting a compatible loudspeaker pole and top speaker above the subwoofer.
What is included for power connection?
A detachable AC power cord is included with the subwoofer. Connect it to the standard 3-prong IEC power connector and use the voltage indicated on the rear panel.
