The Arturia MINIFREAK VOCODER is a 37-key hybrid synthesizer designed for players and producers who want hands-on sound design alongside practical performance controls. It combines dual digital sound engines with six-voice polyphony, analog filtering, sequencing, and stereo effects in a compact keyboard format. The Vocoder Edition adds a supplied gooseneck microphone and dedicated vocoder processing for vocal and external-audio experimentation.

This instrument suits electronic musicians, keyboard players, sound designers, and studio creators looking to move beyond fixed synth tones. Its two sound engines can be combined, layered, FM-linked, or routed so Engine 2 processes Engine 1. That flexible architecture supports everything from conventional melodic patches to animated textures, sampled material, granular sounds, and external-input processing.

MiniFreak Vocoder has a defined hybrid character: its digital oscillators offer a wide range of synthesis methods, while polyphonic analog state-variable filters and VCAs shape the final sound. Low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass filter modes give patches different tonal roles, from softened pads to focused resonant movement. The 16-band vocoder can process a microphone or other external source, and it can also be applied to the instrument's own synth sounds.

Performance and modulation are central to the workflow. Each voice includes an ADSR envelope, a cycling envelope, and two LFOs, while the modulation matrix provides seven sources and 13 potential destinations. A 64-step sequencer with four modulation-automation lanes, an arpeggiator, touch strips, and customizable LFO curves make it possible to create evolving parts without depending on external sequencing hardware.

MiniFreak Vocoder integrates easily into keyboard, DAW, MIDI, and modular-oriented setups. It provides MIDI In, Out, and Thru, USB connectivity, analog clock input and output, sustain input, audio input, and balanced stereo outputs. MiniFreak V software mirrors the hardware architecture for working with compatible presets in a computer-based production workflow.

Key Features

  • Six-Voice Hybrid Architecture: Dual digital engines and analog filters combine flexible synthesis with analog tone shaping.
  • 16-Band Vocoder: Process the included microphone or another external source for vocoded voice and texture effects.
  • 37-Key Expressive Keybed: Velocity-sensitive slim keys with aftertouch support more detailed performance control.
  • 31 Oscillator Modes: Multiple synthesis approaches provide a broad palette for patches and sound design.
  • 64-Step Sequencer: Create patterns across four 16-step pages with four modulation automation lanes.
  • System Connectivity: MIDI, USB, analog clock, sustain, audio input, and balanced stereo outputs support varied rigs.

Design & Installation

The MiniFreak Vocoder uses a compact 578 x 231 x 55 mm keyboard format with a white-and-orange finish, an OLED display, tactile front-panel controls, and two performance touch strips. Arturia does not publish a specific housing-material specification. Its layout keeps oscillator, filter, modulation, sequencing, arpeggiator, and effects controls accessible from the front panel.

Place the synthesizer on a stable keyboard stand, desktop, or production surface, then power it with the included 12V/1A universal power supply. Connect its balanced stereo outputs to an audio interface, mixer, monitors, or other line-level destination; use USB or MIDI for computer and hardware integration. For vocal processing, connect the included 30 cm gooseneck microphone and select the external-input vocoder effect; the audio input can also accept other compatible external sound sources.
