Arturia MINIFREAK 37-Key 6-Voice Hybrid Synthesizer

The Arturia MiniFreak is a 37-key hybrid synthesizer designed for players and producers who want broad sound-design range without a large keyboard footprint. Its six-voice architecture combines two digital sound engines with analog filtering, giving users direct access to both precise digital textures and more traditionally shaped synth tones. It is suited to writing, performing, sequencing, and adding distinctive synthesized parts to a studio or live setup.

MiniFreak is built for musicians who want hands-on control over evolving pads, basses, leads, rhythmic sequences, sampled textures, and experimental effects. The velocity-sensitive Slim-key keyboard includes aftertouch for added playing expression, while touch strips provide pitch, modulation, macro, and sequence-performance control. Chord and Scale functions can also help turn simple playing ideas into harmonically organized parts.

The instrument offers six-voice polyphony, with 12-voice paraphonic, unison, and mono configurations available for different performance needs. Its two sound engines provide 31 oscillator modes, including virtual analog, FM, wavetable, granular, sample, physical-modeling-inspired, filtering, and audio-input options. Engine 2 can process Engine 1, allowing layered and transformed sounds within a single patch.

Polyphonic analog state-variable filters and VCAs provide the MiniFreak's analog stage, with low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass filter modes plus self-oscillation capability. Each voice has an ADSR envelope, cycling envelope, and two LFOs, while the modulation matrix supports both direct sound shaping and more complex movement. Three digital effects slots add stereo processing such as chorus, delay, reverb, distortion, EQ, compression, and vocoder effects.

For production workflows, MiniFreak includes a 64-step sequencer with four automation lanes, an arpeggiator, MIDI DIN connections, USB, analog clock I/O, sustain input, audio input, balanced stereo outputs, and a headphone output. It can connect to MIDI hardware, modular-oriented clocked gear, an audio interface, mixer, powered monitors, or headphones. The included power supply and USB cable support straightforward setup, while MiniFreak V provides a software counterpart for computer-based work.

Design & Installation

MiniFreak uses a compact 37-note keyboard format with a dedicated front-panel control layout, OLED display, central encoder, touch strips, sequencer controls, arpeggiator controls, and custom LFO-shaper pads. The layout places core synthesis, modulation, performance, and preset controls within reach for direct operation. At 22.76 by 9.09 by 2.17 inches, it is sized for desktop production spaces, keyboard stands, and portable performance rigs.

Connect the included 12V DC power supply, then route the balanced left and right outputs to an interface, mixer, powered speakers, or other appropriate line-level destination. Headphones connect through the dedicated 1/4-inch stereo headphone output; MIDI gear can use the 5-pin DIN MIDI In, Out, and Thru ports, while a computer can connect through USB Type-B. A sustain pedal, external audio source, and analog clock-equipped equipment can be connected through their dedicated rear-panel inputs and outputs.
