The Arturia MicroFreak Vocoder Edition is a compact hybrid hardware synthesizer with a dedicated 16-band vocoder and included gooseneck microphone. It combines a digital oscillator section with an analog filter, giving players a flexible instrument for melodic parts, basses, textures, sequences, and processed vocal sounds. Its compact format suits desktop studios, portable rigs, and electronic-music setups that need hands-on sound design.

This edition is intended for musicians who want to integrate voice-driven effects without adding a separate vocoder processor. The supplied microphone connects through the headphone/microphone connection, allowing a vocal signal to control the vocoder engine. A compatible CTIA/AHJ-standard 3.5 mm TRRS headset microphone can also be used.

The MicroFreak's sound character starts with its digital oscillator, wavetable synthesis, and multiple oscillator modes, then passes through an analog state-variable filter. It supports monophonic operation as well as paraphonic playing with up to four voices. The capacitive keyboard adds polyphonic aftertouch, providing pressure-based expression for more active performances.

For motion and pattern work, the instrument includes a 5 x 7 modulation matrix, a synced LFO, an ADSR envelope, and a cycling envelope. Its arpeggiator offers multiple playback modes, while the onboard sequencer supports 64 steps and two patterns per preset. The OLED display and direct controls make patch selection and parameter adjustment practical during recording or performance.

The MicroFreak Vocoder Edition can serve as a self-contained sound source, a MIDI controller, or a bridge to modular hardware. USB handles computer connection, MIDI is available through 3.5 mm TRS ports and included adapters, and dedicated CV, Gate, Pressure, and clock connections support external synths and Eurorack systems. A balanced mono line output connects to a mixer, interface, or amplifier.

Key Features

  • 16-Band Vocoder: Processes voice or compatible external modulator signals with the internal synth engine.
  • 25-Key Capacitive Keyboard: Provides touch response and polyphonic aftertouch in a compact layout.
  • Digital Oscillator: Combines wavetable synthesis and digital oscillator modes for varied sound creation.
  • Analog State-Variable Filter: Supplies low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass filtering at 12 dB per octave.
  • 5 x 7 Modulation Matrix: Routes modulation sources to selected destinations for animated patches.
  • Sequencer And Arpeggiator: Creates repeatable patterns, chord movement, and synchronized rhythmic parts.

Design & Installation

The Vocoder Edition uses a white MicroFreak casing with a dedicated center-strip graphic, a flat capacitive touch keyboard, physical control encoders, and an OLED display. Its design keeps the instrument compact while retaining rear-panel audio, MIDI, clock, USB, and control-voltage connections. The included gooseneck microphone adapter incorporates an electret microphone and an additional headphone output.

Place the MicroFreak on a stable desktop, keyboard stand shelf, or performance table with access to its rear-panel connections. Connect the balanced 1/4-inch mono line output to a mixer, audio interface, or amplifier, and use headphones when operating the vocoder to help avoid microphone feedback. USB, MIDI TRS, CV/Gate/Pressure, and clock connections allow it to be added to computer, MIDI, or modular workflows.
