Arturia MICROFREAK 25-Key Hybrid Synthesizer

The Arturia MicroFreak is a compact hybrid hardware synthesizer built for players and producers who want a broad sound palette without a large keyboard workstation. Its digital oscillator section covers classic, wavetable, physical-modeling, granular, sample-based, and vocoder-oriented approaches, while an analog filter shapes the final tone. The result is an instrument suited to sound design, melodic parts, basses, sequences, and experimental textures.

MicroFreak uses a four-voice paraphonic architecture, allowing up to four notes to be played while sharing its analog filter. This gives chords and layered lines a distinct character while retaining a compact control layout. It can also operate in unison for stacked-voice sounds.

The 25-key touch-capacitive keyboard replaces conventional moving keys with a flat PCB playing surface. It senses touch pressure and can be configured for aftertouch or velocity response, adding direct expression to notes and modulation. Octave controls extend the playable range beyond the two-octave physical key layout.

Its modulation system is designed for hands-on patch building without external patch cables. A 5-by-7 modulation matrix routes five sources to seven destinations, including three user-assignable destinations, and supports positive or negative modulation amounts. A standard envelope, cycling envelope, and LFO provide tools for shaping motion, timbre, pitch, and filter behavior.

MicroFreak fits easily into computer-based, MIDI hardware, and CV/Gate modular setups. USB provides class-compliant MIDI and power capability, while MIDI, clock, pitch, gate, and pressure connections support external instruments. Its balanced mono line output and mono headphone output make connection to a mixer, audio interface, amplifier, or headphones straightforward.

Design & Installation

MicroFreak is a compact desktop instrument with a touch-capacitive PCB keyboard, dedicated oscillator, filter, envelope, sequencing, and modulation controls. The flat keyboard surface has no moving keys and uses copper touch points to register performance input. A front-panel display provides visual feedback for oscillator and parameter settings.

Place the instrument on a stable desktop, keyboard stand shelf, or studio workstation with access to its rear-panel connections. Connect the balanced 1/4-inch mono line output to a mixer, interface, or amplifier, or use the 1/8-inch headphone output for monitoring. For the most reliable capacitive-keyboard operation, use the supplied grounded Arturia power supply; included 1/8-inch TRS-to-5-pin DIN adapters connect external MIDI gear.
