Arturia KEYSTEP-PRO 37-Key Controller and Sequencer

The Arturia KeyStep Pro is a 37-key controller keyboard and hardware sequencer designed to coordinate software instruments, MIDI hardware, and CV-controlled modular gear from one compact desktop unit. It is intended for musicians who want hands-on sequencing without relying solely on a computer screen. The KeyStep Pro does not generate audio itself; it sends performance, note, clock, and control data to compatible external instruments and software.

Its velocity- and aftertouch-sensitive slim keyboard gives performers direct control over dynamics and pressure-based expression. Four melodic tracks can run independent sequences or arpeggiators, while the dedicated drum section handles multi-part rhythmic programming. Per-key LEDs, dedicated transport controls, step buttons, and an OLED display provide visual feedback during composition and live use.

The sequencing workflow supports real-time recording, step recording, and step editing for melodic tracks. Individual notes can retain pitch, velocity, gate length, time shift, and probability data, allowing patterns to move beyond fixed note placement. Scale quantization, chord mode, randomization, polyrhythms, and a performance looper add practical ways to develop variations while working.

KeyStep Pro is engineered as a bridge between MIDI and analog-control environments. It provides four sets of pitch CV, gate, and velocity/modulation outputs, plus eight dedicated drum gate outputs for compatible modular or analog equipment. USB MIDI, MIDI input, two MIDI outputs, clock connections, and reset output help it operate as a central timing and control source for hybrid instrument systems.

For a studio setup, KeyStep Pro can control DAW instruments over USB while simultaneously sequencing external MIDI synths and Eurorack voices. For performance, its track-based layout supports switching patterns, using arpeggiators, recalling project states, and sending clock or transport commands to connected devices. It is a practical upgrade path for players moving from a basic MIDI keyboard or single-track sequencer to a multi-instrument hardware workflow.

Design & Installation

The KeyStep Pro uses a compact, black, desktop-oriented layout with 37 slim keys, illuminated key feedback, dedicated step buttons, five control encoders, transport controls, and an OLED display. Arturia does not publish a specific enclosure-material specification, but the control layout is designed to keep sequencing, performance, and routing functions accessible from the front panel. Its 589 x 208 x 38 mm footprint is suited to placement beside synthesizers, drum machines, modular cases, or a computer workstation.

Place the unit on a stable desktop surface and connect it by USB Type-B to a computer for MIDI control and configuration, or use MIDI DIN and CV/gate connections for external instruments. Use the included 12V DC power supply when required, and match CV pitch, gate, modulation, and clock settings to the requirements of the connected equipment. A sustain pedal can be connected for performance control, while the metronome offers both an internal speaker and line output for monitoring.
