The Arturia KeyLab Essential 49 mk3 is a 49-key USB MIDI keyboard controller designed for hands-on music production, performance, and songwriting. It provides keyboard control, pads, faders, encoders, transport functions, and software navigation in one desktop-friendly controller. It is intended for musicians who want more direct control of virtual instruments and DAW projects than a computer keyboard and mouse can provide.

The velocity-sensitive hybrid synth-piano keybed supports expressive parts while retaining a compact controller format. Eight RGB pads can be used for MIDI notes, finger drumming, clip launching, and other assignable functions, while pitch and modulation wheels add familiar performance control. Chord mode, Scale mode, Hold, and the multi-mode arpeggiator help create melodic and rhythmic ideas without interrupting the writing process.

KeyLab Essential 49 mk3 is built around practical DAW and instrument workflow rather than onboard sound generation. Its nine rotary encoders, nine 30 mm faders, transport switches, command switches, and clickable encoder provide tactile access to mix and instrument parameters. A 2.5-inch LCD display with contextual buttons supplies real-time feedback for presets, parameters, and navigation.

For software-based production, the controller integrates with Arturia Analog Lab and supports custom DAW scripts for Ableton Live, Logic Pro, FL Studio, Cubase, and Bitwig Studio. It also supports MCU/HUI control protocols and offers up to six user presets for custom control assignments. The 5-pin MIDI output extends control to compatible external MIDI instruments such as synthesizers and drum machines.

This controller fits naturally into a computer-based recording setup, whether used as a first full-size production keyboard or as an upgrade from a smaller pad controller. USB-C supplies power and connects the keyboard to a computer and Arturia MIDI Control Center. A rear control-pedal input can be assigned for sustain, expression, or footswitch operation, helping tailor the controller to studio or performance needs.

The KeyLab Essential 49 mk3 uses a focused desktop layout with a 49-note keyboard, dedicated performance controls, RGB pads, faders, encoders, and a central display. Its hybrid synth-piano keybed is velocity-sensitive, and the controller uses a minimum of 40% recycled plastic. Arturia also specifies 100% recyclable packaging for the mk3 series.

Connect the included USB-A-to-USB-C cable between the controller and a compatible computer for power and MIDI communication. Install the desired DAW and included software, then select the appropriate KeyLab Essential integration or control protocol within the software. A compatible pedal can be connected to the control input for sustain, expression, or footswitch duties, while the 5-pin MIDI output can connect the controller to external MIDI gear.
