Mogami PLATINUM STUDIO 12 12' XLR Microphone Cable $134.95
Bundle total: $543.95

The sE Electronics VR1 is a passive ribbon microphone built for recording instruments and voices with the natural character associated with ribbon designs. It is especially suited to close-miking electric guitar cabinets where conventional ribbon microphones can sometimes sound overly dark. Its slim profile also makes it practical in tight studio and stage-miking positions.

Designed for guitar amps, drum overheads, acoustic guitar, piano, brass, woodwinds, strings, room recording, and vocals, the VR1 covers a wide range of sources. Its figure-8 pickup pattern captures sound from the front and rear while rejecting sound from the sides. This makes placement and room acoustics important parts of getting the desired result.

The VR1 provides a 20 Hz to 18 kHz frequency range, extending further into high frequencies than many traditional passive ribbon designs. Its sound is intended to retain ribbon smoothness while preserving useful detail and edge from dynamic sources. With a maximum SPL rating of 135 dB, it is specified for demanding sources such as guitar cabinets and drums.

At its core is a hand-crafted, hand-tensioned 2.5 µm aluminum ribbon paired with a neodymium magnet. sE Electronics uses a mechanical design intended to deliver extended frequency response without active electronics. The result is a passive microphone with 300-ohm impedance and a recommended load impedance above 1 kOhm.

The VR1 connects through a standard 3-pin male XLR output and does not require phantom power to operate. It is phantom-protected, which helps accommodate setups where +48 V cannot be switched off. A shock mount, stand clip, thread adapter, and wooden storage case are included to support placement and transport.

Key Features

  • Passive Ribbon Design: Delivers ribbon microphone character without requiring operating power.
  • Extended Frequency Range: Covers 20 Hz to 18 kHz for detailed instrument capture.
  • Hand-Tensioned Aluminum Ribbon: Uses a 2.5 µm ribbon made for consistent performance.
  • Figure-8 Polar Pattern: Captures front and rear sound while rejecting side sources.
  • High SPL Handling: Rated up to 135 dB for loud musical sources.
  • Included Custom Shock Mount: Supports centered, reversed, flat, or angled microphone positioning.

Design & Installation

The VR1 uses an all-metal housing with a flat, rounded-edge chassis, gold-plated XLR connector, and neodymium magnet assembly. Measuring only 19.5 mm (0.77 in.) thick, it can sit close to a cabinet grille, drum head, or other confined recording position. The microphone weighs 230 g and includes protective storage accessories.

Connect the VR1 to a microphone preamp or audio interface using a balanced 3-pin XLR microphone cable, with an input load above 1 kOhm recommended. Phantom power is not needed for operation, although the microphone is phantom-protected when +48 V is present. Use the included shock mount when flexible angle adjustment or vibration isolation is useful, and position the front or rear lobe of its figure-8 pattern toward the desired source.
