sE Electronics V BEAT BLACK Dynamic Drum Microphone

The sE Electronics V BEAT BLACK is a compact dynamic instrument microphone designed primarily for close-miking snare drums, toms, and percussion. Its low-profile shape helps place the microphone near a drumhead while keeping the setup visually tidy and out of the drummer’s way. It is suited to studio recording, live sound, rehearsal spaces, and touring drum rigs.

The microphone uses a supercardioid pickup pattern to focus on the intended drum while reducing pickup from nearby cymbals, drums, monitors, and other stage sources. This makes it useful where drum isolation and controlled bleed are important. Its 30 Hz to 19 kHz frequency range is intended to capture low drum fundamentals as well as attack and transient detail.

At the center of the V BEAT BLACK is sE Electronics’ DMC7 X dynamic capsule, fitted with an aluminum voice coil and neodymium magnet. The aluminum coil is designed to support a responsive, detailed character for percussive sources. A 2.0 mV/Pa sensitivity and 300-ohm electrical impedance allow connection to standard microphone preamps and mixers through XLR.

An integrated capsule suspension helps isolate the capsule from mechanical vibration and shock without requiring a separate external shock mount. The built-in swivel mount provides angle adjustment, allowing the microphone to be aimed at different areas of a drumhead. Its parallel XLR connector and stand-mount layout keeps the cable routed beneath the microphone body.

The V BEAT BLACK is built with an all-metal die-cast zinc alloy body, spring-steel grille, and gold-plated XLR connector for regular stage and studio handling. A red internal windscreen is fitted, while a spare black internal windscreen is included for a subtler appearance. For rim-mounted setups, it can be paired with the separately available sE Electronics V CLAMP accessory.

Design & Installation

The V BEAT BLACK uses an all-metal chassis made from die-cast zinc alloy, paired with a corrosion-resistant spring-steel mesh grille. Its 61 mm body diameter, 110 mm length, and 347 g weight give it a compact form factor for crowded drum kits. The gold-plated 3-pin male XLR connector provides the microphone output connection.

Connect the microphone to a mixer, audio interface, or microphone preamp using a standard XLR microphone cable. Mount it to a compatible mic stand or hardware using the supplied thread adapter, then use the swivel mount to aim it toward the preferred area of the snare or tom head. Keep the microphone and cable from touching the drumhead, and securely tighten the swivel after positioning; the optional V CLAMP can provide compact drum-rim mounting and additional vertical adjustment.
