The Shure SM58S is a wired dynamic vocal microphone with a cardioid pickup pattern and an integrated on/off switch. It is designed for singers, speakers, rehearsal rooms, live sound systems, and studio voice recording. Its XLR output connects to compatible microphone inputs on mixers, audio interfaces, PA systems, and mic preamps.

The microphone uses a frequency response tailored for vocals, with a brightened midrange and bass rolloff. This voicing helps retain vocal presence while helping manage the extra low-frequency buildup that can occur during close-mic use. The cardioid pattern focuses pickup toward the front of the microphone and reduces sound arriving from the sides and rear.

A moving-coil dynamic element makes the SM58S a practical choice for regular stage and speech use. Its pneumatic shock-mount system is designed to reduce transmission of handling noise and vibration. A built-in spherical wind and pop filter helps reduce breath noise and vocal plosives.

The SM58S adds an integrated on/off switch to the standard SM58-style vocal microphone format. This allows a performer or presenter to mute the microphone at the mic body when appropriate. The switch is useful for applications where quick local control is preferred without disconnecting the XLR cable.

Its enamel-painted die-cast metal housing and spherical steel-mesh grille are made for repeated handling. The included A25D swivel stand adapter supports stand mounting and rotates 180 degrees for positioning. A zippered storage bag is included for transport and storage, while compatible XLR cables and additional accessories are available separately.

Key Features

  • Dynamic Moving-Coil Element: Handles vocal and speech duties without requiring external microphone power.
  • Cardioid Pickup Pattern: Prioritizes sound from the front while reducing off-axis background sound.
  • Vocal-Tailored Response: Uses a brightened midrange and bass rolloff for vocal reproduction.
  • Integrated On/Off Switch: Provides convenient microphone-level muting between uses.
  • Pneumatic Shock Mount: Helps reduce handling vibration and mechanically transmitted noise.
  • Built-In Pop Filter: Helps control wind, breath noise, and close-mic plosives.

Design & Installation

The SM58S uses a dark gray, enamel-painted die-cast metal case with a matte-finished, silver-colored spherical steel-mesh grille. Its internal pneumatic shock-mount system and integrated spherical filter support clean vocal capture during handheld use. The microphone measures 162 mm long by 51 mm wide and has a net weight of 330 g.

Connect the male three-pin XLR output to a low-impedance microphone input with a suitable XLR cable. For stand use, install the included A25D swivel adapter and position the microphone toward the desired speaker or singer, with unwanted loudspeakers and sound sources placed behind it where practical. The supplied storage bag is useful for carrying the microphone and adapter between venues, rehearsal spaces, or recording setups.
