sE Electronics BL8 omni Omnidirectional Boundary Microphone

The sE Electronics BL8 omni is a low-profile omnidirectional boundary microphone for speech, room ambience, stage-floor use, grand piano capture, and similar recording or sound-reinforcement applications. Its boundary format allows it to sit discreetly on a flat surface while capturing a broad, natural sound field. It is suited to studios, performance venues, boardrooms, houses of worship, and conferencing installations.

The BL8 omni uses a hand-crafted small-diaphragm true-condenser capsule derived from the sE8 omni platform. Its 1/2-inch capsule uses an ultra-thin 3-micron gold-sputtered diaphragm for detailed transient response. The microphone is specified for a neutral, well-balanced response across a 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency range.

Transformerless Class-A circuitry, high sensitivity, and low-noise electronics support clean capture across quiet and loud applications. The microphone provides 143 dB SPL handling with no pad engaged, rising to 163 dB SPL with its 20 dB pad selected. This makes it practical for ambience and speech duties as well as louder stage or instrument sources.

Three underside controls provide useful setup flexibility before the signal reaches a mixer, preamp, or audio interface. A switchable low-cut filter can reduce rumble and footfall noise, while the 10 dB and 20 dB attenuation settings help prevent input overload. The Character switch offers Classic and Modern voicings, with a neutral center setting for unshaped capture.

The BL8 omni can also be adapted as needs change. It accepts the optional sE8 cardioid capsule, which is not included, for more directional applications. Its standard 3-pin XLR output requires 48V phantom power from a compatible microphone input or external phantom-power supply.

Design & Installation

The BL8 omni has an all-metal housing, a durable dent-resistant grille, and gold-plated XLR contacts. Its compact 139 x 95 x 28.5 mm footprint helps keep the microphone unobtrusive on tables, floors, piano lids, and other flat surfaces. The housing is designed for dependable use in installed, studio, and touring environments.

Connect the microphone to a balanced XLR microphone input that supplies 48V phantom power according to IEC 61938; a TRS connection cannot pass the required phantom power. For permanent mounting, the enclosure provides two mounting points accessible after removing the grille, and mounting screws are not included. Use the low-cut, pad, and Character switches to suit the source, room, and available preamp headroom.
