The sE Electronics BL8 is a professional half-cardioid boundary microphone built for capturing kick drums, stage floors, grand pianos, room ambience, and other demanding sources. Its low-profile form allows it to sit inside a kick drum or mount discreetly on a flat surface where a conventional stand-mounted microphone may be impractical. It is designed for engineers, musicians, venues, and production teams that need a durable condenser microphone with flexible tone-shaping controls.

For kick drum use, the BL8 is engineered to reproduce low frequencies accurately while retaining the attack needed to define the beater and drum shell. It can be used as an inside-kick microphone on its own or paired with an external kick microphone such as the sE V KICK. The selectable Classic and Modern character settings provide alternate low-mid shaping for studio or live-sound applications, while the center setting retains a neutral response.

The BL8 uses the same hand-crafted small-diaphragm true-condenser capsule platform as the sE8, including a 1/2-inch capsule with an ultra-thin 3-micron gold-sputtered diaphragm. This design supports detailed transient capture for percussive instruments and natural recording on piano, room, and ambience duties. Its half-cardioid boundary pattern is intended for placement against a surface, helping it capture the source and surrounding acoustic space from a low-profile position.

Transformerless Class-A circuitry and low-noise electronics give the BL8 substantial headroom for loud sources. A switchable 10 dB or 20 dB attenuation pad helps prevent overload at the connected microphone preamp or audio interface, and the microphone is rated for up to 163 dB SPL with the 20 dB pad engaged. A switchable 80 Hz or 160 Hz low-cut filter can reduce rumble, footfall noise, and excess low-frequency buildup when appropriate.

The BL8 is a practical upgrade for systems that need one microphone to cover kick-in, floor, piano, speech, conference, and room-miking roles. It requires standard 48 V phantom power and connects through a balanced 3-pin XLR connection. Its capsule system is compatible with the optional sE8 omni capsule, and the housing is compatible with the optional Kelly Shu Flatz Isolation System for secure inside-kick mounting.

The BL8 has an all-metal housing with a dent-resistant grille and gold-plated XLR contacts. Its low-profile enclosure measures 139 x 95 x 28.5 mm, making it suitable for placements where clearance is limited. The microphone weighs 538 g and is designed for regular stage, touring, studio, and installed-use environments.

Connect the BL8 to a microphone preamp, mixer, or audio interface using a balanced XLR-to-XLR microphone cable and enable 48 V phantom power. For kick drum use, begin with the 10 dB pad as recommended in the manual, then select the pad, low-cut, and character setting to suit the source and connected preamp. Two internal mounting points allow installation on a surface, wall, ceiling, or grand piano lid with screws that are not included.
