The sE Electronics RNR1 is an active ribbon microphone designed for detailed professional recording. It combines the natural tonal character associated with ribbon microphones with active electronics that support a broad, usable frequency range. It is suited to studios and recording setups that need a figure-8 microphone for vocals, instruments, room capture, and ensemble work.

The RNR1 uses a hand-tensioned 2.5 µm aluminum ribbon and a figure-8 pickup pattern. This pattern captures sound from the front and rear of the microphone while reducing pickup from the sides. It can be useful for close-miking selected sources, stereo techniques, and room or ambient recording applications.

Its active internal electronics require standard 48V phantom power and are designed around discrete Class-A circuitry. Two custom Rupert Neve-designed transformers are incorporated into the signal path. This architecture supports the microphone's sensitivity and helps retain detail across its specified frequency range.

A switchable 100 Hz low-cut filter provides a practical way to reduce low-frequency rumble, footfall noise, and excessive proximity effect when needed. The RNR1 is specified for use on vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar cabinets, piano, strings, woodwinds, brass, drum kits, cymbals, and room sources. Its 137 dB maximum SPL rating also supports placement near louder sound sources when appropriate technique is used.

The microphone includes a custom shockmount to help isolate it from stand-borne vibration and mechanical noise. A wooden box, metal case, thread adapter, and user manual are also included for storage, transport, and setup. Pair it with a balanced XLR cable and a preamp or audio interface that provides compliant 48V phantom power.

Design & Installation

The RNR1 has a precision-machined chassis with distinctive scalloped edges around the ribbon assembly. Its hand-crafted ribbon is paired with neodymium magnets, active discrete electronics, and gold-plated XLR connector contacts. The microphone measures 47 mm in diameter and 268 mm long, with a weight of 860 g.

Mount the RNR1 in its included shockmount on a stable microphone stand, then connect it with a balanced 3-pin XLR cable. Enable 48V phantom power from a compatible preamp, console, or audio interface before use, and use the 100 Hz low-cut switch when low-frequency rumble or proximity effect needs control. Position the front or rear lobe toward the desired source and keep the side nulls aimed toward unwanted sound where practical.
