Mackie EM-89D Dynamic Vocal Microphone $49.99
Bundle total: $144.94

The Mackie ONYX PRODUCER 2-2 is a compact 2x2 USB audio and MIDI interface for recording microphones, instruments, and line-level sources with a computer. It provides two combination XLR/TRS inputs, making it practical for recording a vocal and guitar, two microphones, or other paired sources. USB bus power keeps the setup streamlined for desktop and mobile recording use.

This interface is designed for home-studio users, musicians, podcasters, and creators who need flexible two-channel recording with hardware MIDI connectivity. Each input includes an Onyx microphone preamp, selectable Hi-Z operation, and individual gain control. The layout supports direct connection of microphones, guitars, keyboards, and other line-level equipment.

Its 24-bit/192 kHz USB audio format is intended to capture detailed recordings while maintaining straightforward operation. Signal/overload LEDs help users set input levels before clipping occurs. Balanced line outputs and a dedicated headphone output support monitoring during tracking, editing, and playback.

The ONYX PRODUCER 2-2 uses a front-panel Mix control to blend live inputs with DAW playback at the line and headphone outputs. This analog monitoring path helps performers hear their source without relying solely on software monitoring. A shared +48V switch supplies phantom power to both microphone channels when compatible condenser microphones require it.

For a complete setup, connect the interface to a computer by USB, attach powered monitors or an amplifier to its left and right line outputs, and plug headphones into the front-panel phones jack. Standard 5-pin MIDI input and output ports add support for MIDI controllers, synthesizers, and other MIDI-equipped hardware. Its compact footprint also makes it suitable as a portable recording front end alongside a laptop-based DAW system.

Key Features

  • 2x2 USB Recording: Records and plays back two channels at up to 24-bit/192 kHz.
  • Dual Onyx Preamps: Provides two mic preamps for microphones and compatible sources.
  • Combo Input Jacks: Accepts XLR microphones and 1/4-inch line-level connections.
  • Hi-Z Instrument Modes: Connect guitars directly without a separate DI box.
  • MIDI Input and Output: Connects controllers, synthesizers, and other MIDI hardware.
  • Input/DAW Mix Control: Blends live sources and computer playback for monitoring.

Design & Installation

The ONYX PRODUCER 2-2 uses Mackie's Built-Like-A-Tank hardware design in a compact desktop format measuring 7.4 inches wide, 4.5 inches deep, and 2.0 inches high. Front-panel controls place input gain, Hi-Z selection, phantom power, monitoring, and headphone level within easy reach. A Kensington security slot is provided on the rear panel for compatible security locks.

Connect microphones by XLR or line and instrument sources through the 1/4-inch sections of the combo inputs; engage Hi-Z for direct guitar connection. Connect powered monitors to the balanced or unbalanced 1/4-inch left and right line outputs, then connect the interface to a computer through USB 2.0. PC users should install the applicable Mackie ASIO driver, while the interface is recognized on Mac as a 2x2 device without a driver according to the owner's manual.
