JBL CLUB 122SL 12" Shallow-Mount Subwoofer

The JBL CLUB 122SL is a 12-inch shallow-mount car audio subwoofer made for systems where mounting depth is limited. Its 3-1/4-inch mounting depth helps it fit in compact custom enclosures while retaining the cone area of a 12-inch driver. It is intended for adding dedicated low-frequency output to an amplified vehicle audio system.

This subwoofer handles 400 watts RMS and up to 1200 watts peak, making it appropriate for matching with an external subwoofer amplifier rated for its selected load. Its rated frequency response is 30Hz to 500Hz (-6dB), covering the bass range normally assigned to a subwoofer. A 2-inch voice coil supports its power-handling design.

JBL SSI™ Selectable Smart Impedance lets the installer choose a 2-ohm or 4-ohm nominal load using the switch on the subwoofer. This allows the same driver to be matched to an amplifier designed for either common impedance option. The amplifier must be switched off before changing the SSI setting.

The CLUB 122SL uses an aluminum woofer cone and a high-roll rubber surround. The cone is designed to maintain its shape during excursion, while the surround supports cone movement and linear stability. A vented basket helps circulate air around the voice coil during operation.

For system building, the CLUB 122SL can be used in a recommended sealed or vented enclosure, with each design specified at 0.88 cubic feet including displacement. The vented recommendation uses a 3.54-inch-diameter port that is 10.24 inches long and tunes the enclosure to 43.8Hz. Its switchable impedance and shallow profile make it a practical option for compact bass upgrades.

Design & Installation

The CLUB 122SL combines an aluminum cone, high-roll rubber surround, vented basket, and a large inverted dust cap. Its surround is designed to accept the included-style trim-ring arrangement that conceals mounting fasteners when installed. The subwoofer has a 2-inch voice coil and a switch-selectable nominal impedance of 2 or 4 ohms.

Plan for an 11-inch cutout and at least 3-1/4 inches of mounting depth, plus appropriate rear clearance inside the enclosure. JBL recommends 14AWG to 8AWG speaker wire based on wire-run length, with heavier wire preferred for runs longer than 6 feet. Use a compatible amplifier, set the SSI switch only while the amplifier is off, and observe speaker polarity when connecting the terminals.
