Zoom ZSG-1 On-Camera Shotgun Microphone

The Zoom ZSG-1 is a compact on-camera shotgun microphone for creators who need more focused audio than a built-in camera or phone microphone can provide. Its highly directional pickup is designed to emphasize the sound in front of the mic while reducing unwanted off-axis noise. It is suited to video work such as interviews, vlogs, dialogue capture, and sound-effects recording.

A supercardioid polar pattern gives the ZSG-1 a focused sound character for recording a subject or sound source in front of the camera. Its tailored 50 Hz to 20 kHz frequency range supports clear dialogue and detailed location audio. The microphone is mono and uses a back-electret condenser design with a 14 mm diaphragm.

The ZSG-1 operates from 2 to 5 V plug-in power, allowing it to work with compatible cameras and recording devices without an internal battery. Its stereo mini output connects using the included 3.5 mm stereo mini cable. This simple powered connection helps keep a compact video rig ready for mobile recording.

For handheld and camera-mounted work, the included SMM-3 shock mount is designed to reduce vibration and handling noise reaching the microphone. The included WSM-3 windscreen adds basic protection against light wind noise during outdoor recording. At 40 g, the microphone itself adds minimal weight to a camera, phone, or compact recorder setup.

The ZSG-1 can mount on a camera hot shoe for direct-to-camera recording, or it can be used off-camera with a boom pole or pistol grip and a compatible recorder. For accurate aiming with its focused directionality, Zoom recommends monitoring with headphones when possible.

Design & Installation

The ZSG-1 uses a slim cylindrical microphone body measuring 22.6 mm in diameter and 177 mm long. Its lightweight 40 g construction is intended for mobile camera, phone, and recorder rigs. The included SMM-3 shock mount and WSM-3 windscreen support practical on-location use.

Mount the microphone in the supplied shock mount and attach it to a camera hot shoe or a suitable off-camera support. Connect the included 3.5 mm stereo mini cable to a compatible microphone input, then enable plug-in power on the camera when required. Position the microphone toward the intended sound source and monitor with headphones when available for more accurate placement.
