The Zoom H2essential is a compact handheld audio recorder designed for musicians, podcasters, filmmakers, interviewers, and field recordists. Its three-microphone array gives users flexible front, rear, mono, stereo, and surround-oriented recording options from one portable device. It records directly to microSD media and can also serve as a USB audio interface for computers and compatible mobile devices.
Built-in mid-side microphone technology supports mono, 90-degree stereo, and 120-degree stereo pickup patterns. Users can select front, rear, or front-and-rear recording directions to match a solo performer, two-person conversation, ensemble, ambience, or sound-design session. The mono option uses a hypercardioid pickup pattern to help focus on the desired source.
The H2essential records WAV files at up to 96 kHz in 32-bit float, allowing substantial level adjustment during post-production. This format is designed to reduce the need to set recording gain before capturing changing sound levels. A low-cut filter is also available to reduce low-frequency wind and vocal-pop noise.
For computer-based work, the recorder connects through USB-C and operates as a USB 2.0 High Speed audio interface. It supports multi-channel 4-in/2-out or stereo 2-in/2-out interface operation, and it can record to its microSD card while used as an audio interface. The 3.5 mm mic/line input accepts external sources, while the 3.5 mm phone/line output supports headphones, a camera, or another connected device.
The H2essential fits easily into portable recording setups and can expand with optional Zoom accessories. An optional BTA-1 Bluetooth adapter enables wireless control through the Zoom Handy Control & Sync app, while a separate TCA-1 adapter adds dedicated timecode capability. A tripod mounting thread, onboard speaker, color waveform display, markers, and battery or USB power options support practical location recording.

Design & Installation
The H2essential uses a compact handheld format with dedicated transport controls, pickup-pattern buttons, a volume control, color LCD, integrated speaker, and a built-in tripod mounting thread. Its 1.3-inch full-color display provides a real-time waveform view during recording. The recorder measures 60 mm wide by 44 mm deep by 97 mm high and weighs 170 g with batteries installed.
For standalone recording, install two AA batteries or connect USB power, insert a compatible microSDHC or microSDXC card, then select the recording direction and pickup pattern. For computer, smartphone, or tablet use, connect a data-capable USB-C cable and select the appropriate audio-interface mode; Windows requires a driver. Use the 3.5 mm output for headphones or camera feed, and add an optional BTA-1 adapter when wireless app control is needed.

Does the H2essential need a memory card to record?
Yes. Recording and playback require a microSD card. The recorder supports microSDHC and microSDXC cards, with SDXC capacity supported up to 2TB.
Can it work as a USB microphone?
Yes. It can operate as a USB audio interface with computers, smartphones, and tablets through its USB-C port. It can also record to the microSD card while being used as an audio interface.
Can I connect an external microphone?
Yes. The 3.5 mm stereo MIC/LINE IN jack accepts an external microphone or line-level source and provides 3.3 V plug-in power. Connecting an external microphone disables rear recording.

No separate Bluetooth hardware is built into the recorder. Wireless operation through the Zoom Handy Control & Sync app requires an optional Zoom BTA-1 or another dedicated wireless adapter.
What power options does it use?
It operates on two AA alkaline, lithium, or rechargeable NiMH batteries. It can also run from USB bus power, a portable USB battery, or the optional Zoom AD-17 5 V/1 A AC adapter.
Will it connect directly to a camera?
Its 3.5 mm PHONE/LINE OUT jack can send audio to headphones or a connected device such as a camera. The output level can be adjusted using the volume control or fixed-level settings.
