sE Electronics RF-X WB Microphone Reflection Filter

The sE Electronics RF-X WB is a portable microphone reflection filter designed to reduce room reflections around a microphone during recording. It creates a more controlled area behind and around the mic, helping voice and instrument tracks sound less affected by an untreated room. The white RF-X WB is suited to home studios, podcast spaces, voice-over setups, and mobile recording rigs.

This filter is intended for creators recording vocals, acoustic guitar, and drums, as well as other close-miked sources. It helps reduce the audible influence of nearby walls and hard surfaces rather than replacing full-room acoustic treatment. Used with thoughtful microphone placement, it can help capture a more direct and manageable source signal.

The RF-X uses a four-layer acoustic filter system built from a vented composite outer panel, wool fabric, an air gap, and inner acoustic foam. This layered construction is designed to address reflections across the frequency spectrum instead of relying on foam alone. The result is a more controlled recording environment with minimal added tonal coloration.

A lightweight vented body and redesigned clamp assembly make the RF-X practical for desktop and stand-mounted recording setups. The mounting hardware allows adjustment of microphone distance and filter height, so the microphone can be positioned for the source and recording style. Its compact format makes it easier to move between rooms than a fixed vocal booth.

The RF-X WB installs on a microphone stand and works as part of a complete recording chain with a microphone, appropriate mic clip or shockmount, audio interface or preamp, and recording software. It is a useful upgrade for a basic home-recording setup when room reflections are more noticeable than desired. For the most stable setup, use a conventional vertical mic stand and keep the combined microphone and filter assembly balanced over the stand.

Design & Installation

The RF-X WB has a white finish and a four-layer curved shield structure. Its acoustic assembly uses an outer vented composite panel, wool fabric layer, air-gap layer, and inner acoustic foam layer. The body is designed to be lightweight while retaining a durable, vented construction, and the included mounting bracket uses a redesigned clamp assembly.

Attach the bracket to a stable vertical microphone stand, then secure the filter to the bracket with the supplied bolts. Attach a microphone in a compatible clip or shockmount to the remaining mounting point, then adjust the microphone position and filter height as needed. sE recommends positioning the microphone capsule approximately even with the front edge of the RF-X and balancing the complete assembly directly over the stand.
