sE Electronics RF-X RB Portable Microphone Isolation Shield

The sE Electronics RF-X RB is a portable microphone isolation shield designed to reduce the influence of room reflections during recording. It mounts to a microphone stand and places a curved acoustic filter behind the microphone, helping create a more controlled capture area in untreated spaces. The red-and-black RF-X RB version is suited to home studios, voice recording setups, and portable production rigs.

This filter is intended for creators recording vocals, acoustic guitar, and drums where the surrounding room may add unwanted character to a microphone signal. It does not replace full-room acoustic treatment, but it can help limit reflections arriving from behind and around the mic. Its compact format makes it practical for desktop, bedroom, and mobile recording environments.

The RF-X uses a four-layer acoustic filter construction consisting of a vented composite outer panel, wool fabric layer, air gap, and inner acoustic foam layer. This layered arrangement is designed to attenuate reflections evenly across the frequency spectrum. The result is a more direct, drier recording character with less room coloration than an unfiltered microphone position.

A lightweight, vented body helps keep the RF-X manageable on a conventional vertical microphone stand. The included bracket supports adjustment of the filter height and microphone position, allowing the recording setup to be balanced and aligned for the source being captured. sE Electronics assembles each RF-X by hand in its factory.

The RF-X RB can be used with a microphone held in a clip or shockmount, making it a flexible accessory for many recording systems. It includes the filter, mounting bracket, and a microphone-stand thread adapter, while the microphone and stand are supplied separately. For a balanced setup, the filter and microphone assembly should be positioned directly over the stand.

Design & Installation

The RF-X has a semi-circular portable shield design with a lightweight vented composite body. Its acoustic filter uses four distinct layers: a vented composite panel on the outside, wool fabric, an air space, and acoustic foam on the inside. The red-and-black RF-X RB finish distinguishes this version from other RF-X color options.

Install the bracket on top of a conventional microphone stand where a microphone clip or shockmount would normally attach, then secure the RF-X to the bracket with the supplied screws. Attach the microphone in its clip or shockmount using the included standoff, then adjust the microphone horizontally and the filter vertically. sE recommends starting with the microphone capsule approximately even with the front edge of the RF-X and centered vertically with the filter, then fine-tuning position as needed.
