RØDE VMP+ VideoMic Pro+ On-Camera Shotgun Microphone

The RØDE VideoMic Pro+ is a compact, camera-mount shotgun microphone designed to improve the audio captured with compatible cameras and portable recorders. Its focused supercardioid pickup pattern helps prioritize sound arriving from in front of the camera while reducing surrounding ambience. It is intended for filmmaking, interviews, vlogging, location recording and other single-camera productions.

The microphone uses a condenser capsule with a 20Hz–20kHz frequency range and a line-gradient acoustic design. Its sound character is directional and detailed, with settings that let the user tailor the output for different shooting environments. A selectable high-pass filter can reduce low-frequency rumble from sources such as traffic or air conditioning.

Three output-gain settings provide 0dB, -10dB and +20dB options for matching the microphone to a camera or recorder input. A switchable high-frequency boost adds 5dB above 7kHz when extra top-end detail is helpful, including when using additional wind protection. The safety-channel function records the right channel 10dB lower than the left to provide a backup against unexpected level peaks.

The VideoMic Pro+ supports several power approaches for practical field use. It ships with an LB-1 lithium-ion rechargeable battery and can also operate from two AA batteries or via its Micro USB port. With compatible plug-in power from a connected camera or recorder, its automatic power function can turn the microphone on when connected.

For camera-based recording systems, the VideoMic Pro+ connects through its threaded 3.5mm TRS output and supplies a dual-mono unbalanced signal. Its integrated Rycote Lyre suspension is designed to isolate the microphone from handling and mechanical vibration. The compact form factor makes it a suitable upgrade for creators who need more control over camera audio without adding a separate boom-mounted microphone system.

Design & Installation

The VideoMic Pro+ combines a compact on-camera shotgun format with an integrated Rycote Lyre shock mount, optimized windshield shape, built-in battery door and threaded 3.5mm output socket. Digital switching provides access to its filter, gain, high-frequency boost and safety-channel functions. Status LEDs indicate power source and charging or discharging status, with an ambient-light sensor that raises LED brightness when needed.

Mount the microphone in a compatible camera shoe, or use the integrated 3/8-inch thread for compatible mounting hardware. Connect the supplied 3.5mm TRS cable between the microphone and a camera or portable recorder microphone input, then set the microphone gain and the recorder input level for the source. For outdoor recording, use appropriate additional wind protection when conditions require it; the high-frequency boost can help restore detail when wind protection attenuates high frequencies.
