The RØDE VideoMic VIDEOMIC is a camera-mount shotgun microphone designed to provide more focused audio than a camera’s built-in microphone. Its directional pickup is intended for filming, vlogging, interviews, events, and run-and-gun production where the subject is generally in front of the camera. The microphone connects through a 3.5mm mini-jack output and runs from a single 9V battery.

A supercardioid polar pattern concentrates capture toward the front of the microphone while reducing pickup from the sides and rear. This helps keep dialogue and other forward-facing sounds more prominent within a busy recording environment. The condenser design offers a 40Hz to 20kHz frequency range for broad audio capture.

The VideoMic includes selectable controls for adapting to different recording conditions. An 80Hz high-pass filter can reduce low-frequency rumble from handling, traffic, HVAC systems, or similar sources. A three-position pad offers 0dB, -10dB, and -20dB settings for recording louder sound sources without overloading the input as easily.

Its integrated Rycote Lyre shock mount helps isolate the microphone from vibrations transferred through the camera or mounting surface. This suspension design is useful when shooting handheld or when camera handling could otherwise be heard in the recording. A high-density windshield is included on the microphone for basic wind protection.

The VideoMic mounts to a camera shoe and also has a 3/8-inch thread in its mounting base for use with compatible boompoles, stands, or tripods. It is a practical upgrade for cameras and portable recorders with a compatible 3.5mm microphone input. For stronger outdoor wind reduction or alternate device connections, compatible accessories can be added separately.

Key Features

  • Supercardioid Pickup: Focuses recording toward the subject in front of the camera.
  • Condenser Capsule: Provides detailed audio capture across a 40Hz to 20kHz range.
  • 80Hz High-Pass Filter: Helps reduce low-frequency rumble and unwanted handling noise.
  • Three-Position Pad: Offers 0dB, -10dB, and -20dB level settings.
  • Rycote Lyre Mount: Helps isolate the microphone from camera-borne vibrations.
  • 9V Battery Power: Supplies independent power without relying on plug-in power.

Design & Installation

The VideoMic uses a line-gradient condenser design with active JFET impedance-converter electronics. Its integrated Rycote Lyre suspension mount supports the microphone while helping reduce mechanically transmitted vibration. The microphone measures 250mm long, 102mm wide, and 65mm high, with a net weight of 176g.

Mount the VideoMic in a compatible camera shoe, then connect its 3.5mm mini-jack output to the camera or recorder’s microphone input. Install a 9V alkaline battery before use and select the flat or 80Hz filter setting based on the recording environment. The 3/8-inch mounting thread in the base also supports compatible mic stands, tripods, and boompoles when off-camera placement is preferred.
