RØDE SVMPR Stereo VideoMic Pro Rycote On-Camera Microphone

The RØDE SVMPR Stereo VideoMic Pro Rycote is a battery-powered stereo on-camera microphone for cameras with a 3.5mm microphone input. It is designed for filmmakers, videographers, and content creators who want to capture a more natural sense of space than a camera’s built-in microphone typically provides. Its coincident XY stereo capsule arrangement is suited to ambience, music, events, and environmental sound.

A matched pair of 1/2-inch cardioid condenser capsules captures a broad stereo image with natural depth. The microphone’s 40Hz–20kHz frequency range supports detailed recording across common production sound sources. Its cardioid XY design helps focus pickup toward the front of the camera while retaining stereo separation.

The integrated Rycote Lyre shock mount isolates the microphone from camera handling noise and vibration. A high-density foam windshield is supplied to help reduce light wind noise during location recording. The lightweight 116g design keeps the microphone practical for handheld, DSLR, mirrorless, and camcorder setups.

On-microphone controls include a selectable 75Hz high-pass filter and three-position level control with -10dB, 0dB, and +20dB settings. The -10dB setting can be useful around louder sources, while the +20dB boost can help provide a stronger signal to compatible camera microphone inputs. The filter is intended to reduce low-frequency rumble in recordings.

The SVMPR connects through its attached 3.5mm stereo mini-jack cable and mounts in a standard camera shoe. Its metal shoe mount also includes a 3/8-inch thread for use with compatible boompoles, microphone stands, or tripods. It is a focused upgrade for camera systems that need dedicated stereo location audio without adding a separate recorder.

Design & Installation

The SVMPR uses a compact black housing with integrated Rycote Lyre suspension, a high-density foam windshield, a Kevlar-reinforced braided cable, and a billeted metal camera shoe mount. Its 1/2-inch condenser capsules are arranged in a coincident XY stereo configuration. The microphone weighs 116g and measures 115mm x 80mm x 134mm.

Slide the standard shoe mount into a compatible camera shoe and tighten the mounting nut. Connect the attached 3.5mm stereo mini-jack to the camera’s microphone input, install a 9V battery, and select the desired level and filter setting. Secure the cable in its clip to help reduce cable-borne handling noise; the 3/8-inch threaded base can also be used with compatible mounting hardware.
