RØDE NTG-3B Broadcast Shotgun Microphone

The RØDE NTG-3B is a broadcast shotgun microphone built for focused dialogue and location sound capture. Its supercardioid pickup pattern helps emphasize the intended subject while reducing unwanted sound from the sides and rear. It is suited to film, television, documentary, news gathering, voice-over, and other professional recording applications.

This true condenser microphone uses RF-bias electronics to help maintain operation in humid conditions where condensation can be a concern. The design is intended for demanding outdoor and field environments as well as controlled indoor productions. Its 13 dBA equivalent noise level supports clean capture of quieter sources.

The NTG-3B has a 40 Hz to 20 kHz frequency range, 130 dB SPL maximum sound-pressure handling, and a high-sensitivity output. Its directional response is designed to capture a clear on-axis source while maintaining natural off-axis behavior. These characteristics make it useful for boom operation, camera-mounted workflows, and voice recording.

A balanced 3-pin XLR output connects the microphone to professional cameras, field recorders, mixers, and audio interfaces with suitable microphone inputs. The microphone requires P48 phantom power, operating from 44 to 52 volts and drawing at least 5 mA. No onboard controls or battery compartment are required.

The black NTG-3B integrates easily into a location-sound setup with a boom pole, stand, shock mount, recorder, or camera adapter. It includes an RM5 adjustable mic clip, foam windshield, padded zip pouch, and weather-resistant aluminum storage cylinder. Add a compatible suspension mount and enhanced windshield when greater isolation from handling noise or wind is needed.

The NTG-3B has a slim 19 mm diameter, 255 mm long shotgun form factor with a matte-black finish. It weighs 163 g, helping keep boom and camera rigs manageable. The included aluminum storage cylinder has an anti-roll design and is weather resistant for storage and transport.

Connect the microphone with a quality 3-pin XLR cable to equipment that supplies 48V phantom power at a minimum of 5 mA. Mount it with the included RM5 clip or a compatible shock or suspension mount, taking care not to block the side slots on the microphone. Use the supplied foam windshield outdoors, and consider a dedicated windshield system for stronger wind protection.
