The Rockford Fosgate M2D4-12S is a 12-inch marine subwoofer designed for systems that need strong low-frequency output from a compact sealed enclosure. Its dual 4-ohm voice-coil design and built-in VersaSwitch allow the final nominal impedance to be set to 2 or 8 ohms. It is sold individually and is intended for marine and motorsports audio installations.

This subwoofer is optimized for small sealed enclosures, making it a practical choice when installation space is limited. With 400 watts RMS power handling and a 20 Hz to 750 Hz frequency response, it is built to add substantial bass support below full-range marine speakers. The sealed-box alignment favors controlled bass response for boat, UTV, and other outdoor audio systems.

Color Optix RGB LED lighting is integrated into the M2D4-12S for coordinated system illumination. A separately sold Rockford Fosgate PMX-RGB controller and the RF Connect app are required to configure lighting colors and patterns. Wide-angle LEDs help provide visible accent lighting around the subwoofer grille.

The M2D4-12S uses Element Ready construction for demanding outdoor environments. Its marine-focused design includes UV-stable ASA plastic frame and grille components, corrosion-resistant terminals, sealed Deutsch connections, and certification for marine exposure. The injection-molded mineral-filled polypropylene cone includes UV inhibitors, while the VAST surround increases effective radiating area.

For system integration, the subwoofer includes integrated Deutsch and Amphenol connectivity as well as conventional spade terminals. The VersaSwitch simplifies series or parallel voice-coil configuration without extra jumper wiring at the driver. It can be paired with a marine amplifier selected to deliver appropriate power at the chosen 2- or 8-ohm load.

Design & Installation

The M2D4-12S combines a UV-stable ASA plastic frame and grille structure with an injection-molded mineral-filled polypropylene cone and UV inhibitors. Gold-plated marine-grade brass terminals are used for corrosion resistance, while the integrated Deutsch DT connections use front and rear silicone seals. The two-piece grille design allows the included stainless-steel or sport grille option to be fitted to suit the installation.

Install this subwoofer in a properly built, airtight sealed enclosure with approximately 0.75 cubic foot (21 liters) of internal volume per manufacturer guidance. The mounting cutout is 11 inches and the listed mounting depth is 4.87 inches, so verify panel clearance before cutting. Use the VersaSwitch to choose the 2- or 8-ohm configuration required by the amplifier, and add the optional PMX-RGB controller when Color Optix lighting control is desired.
