The Rockford Fosgate M2D4-12IB is a 12-inch marine subwoofer engineered for infinite-baffle installations where a conventional subwoofer enclosure is not practical. It is designed for boats and powersports systems that need dedicated low-frequency output while preserving usable storage space. A properly isolated mounting baffle separates the front and rear sound waves to help prevent bass cancellation.

This model is intended for listeners building a marine audio system with substantial bass capability and weather-conscious components. Its 400-watt RMS power rating supports use with a suitably matched external amplifier, while the dual 4-ohm voice-coil design provides installation flexibility. The built-in VersaSwitch changes the final impedance configuration to either 2 or 8 ohms without conventional series or parallel jumper wiring.

The M2D4-12IB is tuned for low- and mid-bass reproduction, with a published frequency response of 20 Hz to 750 Hz. Its 15 mm Xmax and VAST surround design support substantial cone movement and increased effective radiating area. The result is a purpose-built subwoofer for adding bass impact to open-air listening environments.

Integrated Color Optix RGB LED lighting adds configurable illumination to the speaker assembly. Lighting control requires the separately sold Rockford Fosgate PMX-RGB Color Optix controller and the RF Connect app. Integrated Deutsch and Amphenol connections are designed to simplify the marine-grade lighting connection process.

Design & Installation

The M2D4-12IB uses an injection-molded mineral-filled polypropylene cone, UV-stable foam surround, composite spider, and a high-temperature injection-molded frame. Gold-plated marine-grade brass terminals support corrosion-resistant signal connections, while the grille and frame use UV-stable plastic construction. The integrated lighting system uses wide-angle RGB LEDs with sealed marine-style connectors.

Install this subwoofer in an infinite-baffle location with an 11-inch cutout and at least 5.13 inches of mounting depth. A rigid mounting baffle is required to isolate the rear wave from the front wave, even though a conventional enclosure is not required. Match the amplifier to the selected 2-ohm or 8-ohm VersaSwitch setting, and add the separately sold PMX-RGB controller when Color Optix lighting control is desired.
