The Rockford Fosgate M2D4-12I is a 12-inch marine subwoofer designed for infinite-baffle installations where a conventional enclosure is not practical. It is intended for boats and powersports systems that need dedicated low-frequency output while preserving available storage or cockpit space. A mounting baffle is required to separate the front and rear sound waves and help prevent acoustic cancellation.

This dual-voice-coil model is rated for 400 watts RMS and 1,600 watts peak power handling. Its 20-750 Hz frequency response and 90 dB sensitivity support a strong low-frequency foundation for a marine audio system. The 4-ohm DVC design uses Rockford Fosgate's VersaSwitch to select either a 2-ohm or 8-ohm final load without rewiring the voice coils.

Integrated Color Optix RGB LED lighting adds illumination around the subwoofer for coordinated marine-system styling. The lighting can connect to a separately sold Rockford Fosgate PMX-RGB Color Optix controller for color-pattern control through the RF Connect app. The subwoofer also includes a Color Optix harness and uses integrated connector provisions to simplify signal and lighting connections.

The M2D4-12I is built for exposed marine environments with an Element Ready design and IP67 certification. Its white finish can be tailored with the included stainless-steel grille or white Sport grille insert. This makes it suitable for installations where appearance, water resistance, and UV exposure are practical considerations.

For reliable operation in an infinite-baffle application, Rockford Fosgate specifies an infrasonic filter at or above the subwoofer's free-air resonance frequency. An active 80-100 Hz low-pass crossover at 12 dB per octave is also recommended for subwoofer use. Pair it with an amplifier that is stable at the selected 2-ohm or 8-ohm VersaSwitch setting and sized appropriately for its RMS rating.

Design & Installation

The M2D4-12I combines a white marine-ready frame and trim system with an interchangeable two-piece grille arrangement. Included stainless-steel mounting screws, a stainless-steel grille, and a white Sport grille support a finished appearance suited to exposed boat installations. The integrated Color Optix harness and connector-based wiring provisions help keep the lighting setup organized.

Plan for a 10.9-inch cutout, 5.24-inch mounting depth, and 13.87-inch overall diameter before installation. Mount the subwoofer on a properly sized baffle that isolates the front and rear wave paths, then set the VersaSwitch to match an amplifier rated for either 2 or 8 ohms. Use an infrasonic filter for infinite-baffle operation, set a suitable low-pass crossover, and use the optional PMX-RGB controller when app-based Color Optix control is desired.
