JBL R3500 Marine Digital Media Receiver

The JBL R3500 is a weather-resistant marine digital media receiver designed for boats and other exposed marine audio installations. It combines radio reception, Bluetooth streaming, USB playback, and an auxiliary input in a compact source unit. It is intended for listeners who want a central control point for music and radio without a CD mechanism.

A built-in four-channel amplifier provides power for a marine speaker system, while 2-ohm stability supports expanded speaker configurations when wired correctly. The amplifier is rated at 4 x 55 watts peak at 4 ohms and 20 watts RMS per channel. Stereo RCA pre-outs also provide a path to add an external amplifier or powered subwoofer.

The R3500 includes Bluetooth 5.0 for wireless audio streaming from compatible devices. Its Bluetooth name is R3500, and the operating manual notes an approximate wireless range of 30 feet depending on conditions. Bluetooth playback can be paused and resumed from the receiver.

For broadcast listening, the integrated tuner receives AM, FM, and Weather Band stations. FM1, FM2, AM, and WB are available as source modes, with six presets available per band. USA and European tuner-area settings are selectable through the receiver menu.

The 4-inch monochrome LCD and backlit rotary encoder are designed for clear source and setting control at the helm. The front face is rated IPX7 and the rear section is rated IPX3, helping the receiver suit a marine environment. USB, auxiliary, antenna, RCA, and wiring-harness connections are located at the rear for a clean front-panel layout.

Design & Installation

The R3500 uses a black marine-oriented chassis with a 4-inch monochrome LCD, backlit power button, and backlit rotary encoder. Its face carries an IPX7 water-resistance rating, while the rear is rated IPX3. A 15-amp fuse is integrated into the wiring arrangement, and the rear harness should be routed downward to help reduce water ingress around the harness area.

Installation uses the supplied foam mounting gasket and four screws, with the gasket serving as a cutout template. The published cutout size is 5.1875 inches wide by 2 inches high, and mounting depth is 4.75 inches. Connect the included harness to power, ground, four speaker channels, and accessory wiring; connect optional antenna, USB, auxiliary, RCA, and external-amplifier connections as needed.
