The Zoom H1 XLR is a compact two-channel recorder designed for capturing microphones, instruments, mixer feeds, and other audio sources away from a studio. It provides two locking XLR/TRS combo inputs alongside a 3.5 mm stereo mic/line input for flexible source connection. Its portable format suits musicians, filmmakers, podcasters, and creators who need a dedicated recorder with professional-style input options.

32-bit float WAV recording and dual A/D converter circuits are central to the H1 XLR design. This approach gives recordings broad usable dynamic range and removes the need for conventional input-gain adjustment on the XLR/TRS inputs. Recording is available at 44.1, 48, or 96 kHz in stereo or mono.

Its two combo inputs accept XLR or 1/4-inch TRS connections, with individual hardware mic/line level switches. The recorder can accept microphone-level sources or professional line-level feeds up to +24 dBu in line mode. It also supplies +48 V phantom power for compatible condenser microphones and 2.5 V plug-in power through its stereo mini input.

The 128 x 64 OLED display includes a real-time waveform view to help monitor recording activity. A built-in mixer allows adjustment of each track's input level, while the 3.5 mm phone/line output supports headphone monitoring or connection to a camera. An onboard speaker provides quick playback reference without requiring headphones.

The H1 XLR records directly to compatible microSDHC and microSDXC cards, with support up to 1 TB. Its USB-C connection also enables a 2-in/2-out USB audio interface for computers and compatible mobile devices, including simultaneous SD-card recording. Power can come from two AA batteries, USB bus power, an external USB battery pack, or the optional Zoom AD-17 AC adapter.

Design & Installation

The H1 XLR is a handheld recorder with a 128 x 64 OLED display, physical controls, locking combo input connectors, and a built-in 20 mm by 30 mm elliptical dynamic speaker. Its compact housing measures 62.1 mm wide, 107 mm deep, and 39.3 mm high. A built-in 1/4-20 tripod mount provides an option for tripod, camera-rig, or accessory mounting.

For setup, insert a compatible microSDHC or microSDXC card, connect microphones or line sources to the appropriate inputs, and select mic or line mode for each combo input. Use XLR connections for microphones or balanced sources, the 3.5 mm input for compatible stereo mics, lavaliers, phones, or similar devices, and the 3.5 mm output for headphones or camera audio input. The recorder can operate from two AA batteries or USB-C power; use a data-capable USB cable when connecting it for audio interface or file-transfer use.
