Rockford Fosgate M1D2-8B 8" RGB Marine Subwoofer

The Rockford Fosgate M1D2-8B is an 8-inch marine subwoofer designed to add controlled low-frequency output to compatible boat and outdoor audio systems. Its black Color Optix grille incorporates RGB lighting, giving an installation both bass reinforcement and configurable illumination. It is sold as an individual subwoofer.

This model is intended for marine applications where moisture, UV exposure, vibration, and salt-air conditions can challenge conventional audio equipment. Its Element Ready construction and IP67 certification support use in properly installed marine systems. The black grille and frame are suited to installations where a darker, integrated appearance is preferred.

The M1D2-8B is rated for 150 watts RMS and 600 watts peak, with a 20 Hz to 750 Hz published frequency-response range. Its 7 mm Xmax, 87.5 dB sensitivity, and vented motor design support low-frequency reproduction in compact marine audio builds. It can be used in sealed, ported, or infinite-baffle applications when the installation is designed appropriately.

A VersaSwitch simplifies impedance selection by configuring the dual 2-ohm voice coils for either a 1-ohm or 4-ohm final load. This helps match the subwoofer to an amplifier without requiring external series or parallel voice-coil wiring. Integrated Deutsch and Amphenol connections provide plug-and-play options for speaker and lighting connections.

For lighting control, the M1D2-8B works with the Rockford Fosgate PMX-RGB Color Optix controller and RF Connect app; the controller is sold separately. It is a practical choice for a Color Optix-equipped marine system or as part of a staged upgrade that adds bass before expanding to matching speakers, amplifiers, and lighting accessories. Select an amplifier that is stable at the chosen 1-ohm or 4-ohm load and power the RGB circuit separately as specified.

Design & Installation

The M1D2-8B uses an injection-molded, mineral-filled polypropylene cone with a co-molded Santoprene VAST surround. Its 100% UV-stable ASA plastic frame and grille, zinc-nickel-plated marine-grade brass terminals, insulated silicone tinsel leads, and water-repelling mesh-covered vented motor are engineered for marine exposure. The subwoofer also includes an integrated RGB lighting assembly with optically clear UV-stable encapsulation.

Plan for a 7.10-inch cutout, 3.43-inch mounting depth, and 9-inch overall diameter. The mounting pattern uses six screws at 60-degree intervals, and the grille/trim ring is included. Use the VersaSwitch to select the final impedance before connecting the amplifier, and use a 9-16V lighting supply with a recommended 1A fuse; the optional PMX-RGB controller is required for Color Optix app control.
