KRK S8.4 8" Powered Studio Subwoofer

The KRK S8.4 is an 8-inch powered studio subwoofer designed to extend the low-frequency range of a nearfield monitoring system. It gives producers, engineers, DJs, and content creators a dedicated way to hear bass information that smaller studio monitors may not fully reproduce. Its active design includes onboard amplification, so no separate subwoofer amplifier is required.

A glass aramid composite woofer and Class D amplifier combine for controlled low-frequency monitoring in compact studio spaces. The S8.4 is specified for a 34.5 Hz to 133 Hz frequency response and a 29 Hz to 205 Hz frequency range at -10 dB. This makes it suited to checking kick drums, bass instruments, low-frequency effects, and overall mix balance.

The rear-panel four-position crossover helps integrate the subwoofer with different monitor sizes and listening setups. Its line-level outputs automatically high-pass the signal sent to connected studio monitors above the selected crossover point. This can help divide bass duties between the subwoofer and main monitors in a straightforward 2.1 monitoring system.

Connection flexibility includes balanced XLR and 1/4-inch TRS inputs and outputs, along with unbalanced RCA inputs and outputs. The input sensitivity control offers Nominal and High settings to accommodate studio-oriented and consumer-oriented source equipment. A polarity switch and ground-lift control provide useful adjustment options when integrating the subwoofer into a multi-component audio system.

The S8.4 also supports an optional momentary footswitch for subwoofer and high-pass-filter bypass. When activated, the subwoofer mutes and the connected monitors receive a full-range signal, allowing quick comparison of mixes with and without the subwoofer. Its front-firing port and low-profile cabinet support practical placement in many desktop and nearfield studio environments.

Design & Installation

The S8.4 uses a front-loaded, vented enclosure built from 15 mm and 18 mm reinforced MDF. It has a black vinyl wrap finish with a black-painted baffle, plus an EVA isolation pad. The cabinet measures 11 inches high, 16.125 inches wide, and 11.5 inches deep.

Connect a mixer, audio interface, or other line-level source to the matching XLR, 1/4-inch TRS, or RCA inputs, then route the corresponding outputs to powered monitors or to an external amplifier for passive monitors. Start with the volume low, select a crossover setting appropriate to the monitors, and use the polarity and ground-lift controls as needed. An optional momentary footswitch can be connected to engage subwoofer and high-pass-filter bypass; the footswitch is not included.
